  1. This will definitely result in a rational conversation.

  2. These shit stains can only regurgitate the same bullshit over and over and over

  3. HBO’s Harry Potter where everyone in Britain is either black or trans

  4. Every book specifies that he’s supposed to be this ugly, pale, greasy haired, thin, yellow uneven teeth with long nose guy. The new guy looks way too handsome. It’s andrew garfield spiderman all over again.

  5. You’re free to change genders and races of characters but when the show bombs don’t act like you don’t know why. People like familiarity.

Go ahead and downvote but it’s true. These are established characters that everyone has a mental image of when they think of them. For a large percentage of people they’re going to see this and say that’s not Snape and never give the show a chance.

Nobody wants a black Snape just like no one wants a white Nick Fury.

  6. Such a rage bait, snape was such a great character and changing his character around like this is quite possibly the dumbest thing they couldve done

  7. > negotiations have yet to take place

    Everyone calm down, sheesh.

  8. Absolutely not. Against the source material for one. For two, Adam Driver is literally right there.

  9. This show is gonna flop. Not an accurate portrayal of Snape at all.

  10. Adam driver is literally right there what are you guys doing?!?

  11. I vote dolph lundgren in a hot mesh tanktop for severus snape

  12. So that’s why Lily rejected Snape. Cuz he was black!! RIP Alan Rickman.

  13. I feel like snape is legitimately the worst character to race swap. Hell it’d make more sense to make all the Weasleys black instead of snape. Shits dumb as fuck

  14. I am actually a fan of this decision. I loved Paapa Essiedu‘s role in Black Mirror and found him charming, so it would be nice to see him in another big project. Alan Rickman would be extremely hard to replace and recast, so going in an entirely different direction instead of casting a similar looking man who might try to replicate Alan Rickman’s iconic voice would be ideal. He might be a bit too charismatic for Snape, but I’m excited to see what happens with this. Plus I’m racking my brain and can’t think of a character in Hogwarts that is actually black, save for one student I have no idea what their name is, so even if they introduced a black character, people still wouldn’t be happy because it isn’t like the source material.

Edit – it was just an opinion guys chill :’)

  15. Man, HBO has a chance to completely alienate every side of the Harry Potter fanbase. People will either hate it because of JKR or they’ll hate it because of black Snape.

It’s like juggling chainsaws. I’d stay book-accurate if I were them, as that’s the main complaint from fans about the movies, all the missing content.

  16. I think this is a miss, but what do I know.

It’s only proven to be wrong nearly every time they cast a different gender or race for a well known character for a show.

Dr. Who is doing great I’m sure for the 12 people still watching.

  17. Alan Rickman as a force ghost

“Id like to see you try….”

  18. I’m up for it, but only if they refer to him as Black Snape.

    Seriously though, wtf..

  19. Black Hermione > black Snape.
It’s not an actual deviation from the source material for one and I think would be a more impactful character to alter the race of.

  20. If they offerin, I don’t see dude turning it down, this is a guaranteed at least 6 seasons paycheck

  21. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the book, but I don’t recall Snape’s general appearance having any relevance to the story, and shows and movies always make superficial changes from the source material. It’s weird that people only seem to get offended when it’s about race, especially in a fantasy setting where race was never relevant.

  22. As a person of color, I am BEGGING Hollywood to *stop* having people of color play popular and beloved white characters. Not only is it condescending (it always feels like Hollywood is giving us crumbs; how about making original roles for us? Adapting the many, many amazing books written by POC or with POC main characters?)—but it always increases racism against us. Every angry white fan assumes we all loooooove white characters being raceswapped (when a lot of DO NOT) and then we have to suffer peoples’ ire.

Also, I just want to clarify—I don’t think simply wanting characters to look book accurate is racist. I’m actually all for that. I want Snape to be a sallow, pale, oily little shit who looks like he’s never seen the sun. There’s nothing wrong with fans being upset that characters don’t look book accurate and I think Hollywood is really stupid for constantly poking the bear. It’s just that there are ALSO a lot of fans who let their ire out in genuinely racist ways, which is very frustrating and exhausting and painful (at times) to experience as a person of color.

  23. Calling Hagrid to be trans at whatever height they deem a half-giant to be

  24. If I were that actor I would nope the fuck out of the running for that role. I would not put my career at risk because it will just not be received well by book fans . Myself included

  25. Wow one character is cast differently and the entire audience is already melting down

  26. He was great in that episode. You could tell he’d be a big star. Massive charisma.

  27. It can’t be that hard to stick to the book, i thought that was the whole point of doing a season a book. But also, in before they turn another well-beloved ginger character/s black
