Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in 1994. Now it’s asking why

  1. Biggest blunder in history. Many thought the world would be a better place after the collapses of the ussr, but turns out evil lurks in the shadows ready to pounce on the vulnerable! The lesson: have nukes, get nukes, be in alliance with someone who has nukes!

  2. My understanding was that because they were controlled by russians in a military base which they were supposed to attack to take posesion and they were well paid for it by the US. I understand that they knew back then that the security guarantees were useless… Is this wrong? Also, I understand it would be hard for Ukraine to get weapon grade nuclear material, because they don’t have the centrifuges and they import their civilian uranium from Canada… Am I wrong?

  3. Great job USA, promised them security then forgot to show up.

  4. I’m sorry on the USA’s behalf. Our new politicians don’t remember old deals. We are better than this

  5. Ukraina in 1991 had Zero absolutely Zero economy to handle this equipment. It would have rusted and become more dangerous for Ukrain then for any foreign nation.

We all want Ukrain to win but stop link this shit

  6. They trusted the signers to actually do what they agreed to. Sadly, Putin has violated every treaty his country has agreed to, especially with respect to those “enshrined” in the UN Charter.

  7. In hind sight that was a very short sighted decision. Blame the US and UK that pushed for it.

  8. I was under the impression they gave the 1400 nukes to the west for dismantling, not Russia. There are things that are conflicting in what I found. Can someone explain this please?

  9. Obama made that choice in 2014. Probably the single worst failure in foreign policy and national security in the US history.

  10. Ukraine needs to get them back. Knowing what the resourceful & intelligent Ukrainian people can do, I think they will.

Only way to dissuade Russia from repeating history in a few years.

  11. Should have used it to ask for NATO membership instead … these people don’t keep to their word.

  12. After the new statehood status, the parliament was selected from the old pro Russian leadership.

  13. Ukraine needs to have the nukes again. End of the story.

  14. You can be sure, no one will ever give up their nukes again or stop pursuing them.

  15. Because many didn’t see Russians as enemies even between 2014-2022.

Some still don’t see the connection between the Russian language, “culture” presence and tolerance for Russians.

Nukes would never help against terrorists (Russians). It could be even worse. they would just spread separatism, terrorism and slow attacks like in Donbass. And Ukraine would have never gotten a lot of military support.

People should ask about NATO requests in 2008

Russians are enemies of Europe and terrorists always have been and always will be. Anyone who absolutely baselessly denies that idea is a victim of russian propaganda or just wants to do business with Russians, and does the same thing as “taking nukes from Ukraine”, “removing sanctions from Russia”.

  16. Ukraine gave up the Soviet nuclear arsenal that was stationed on it’s territories because it was the best move to do at the time. Ukraine didn’t have the codes to actually use the missiles, they didn’t have the economy required to service the missiles and they didn’t have the international reputation to be able to become a nuclear power without being turned into a international pariah like North Korea and Iran.
