What a beautiful baby – how awful.
“The mat carried a safety warning for babies and toddlers not to be left on it unsupervised.”
Come on parents!!!
Poor wee guy. There are so many mats, nests and pods sold that look like a safe place for babies to sleep but aren’t.
Hate these stories but it’s useful to hear. Surprised I can function as human seeing as there’s a baseline level of dread at all times thinking about worst case scenarios all the time for my baby

Its disappointing that the Mum, who was feeling unwell, asked the dad to check on the child, take the child out of the playmat and put the child in his Moses basket where he normally slept. But the father ignored the mother’s request. Peeked, on the child decided he was OK in the play mat and left him in there.
You don’t leave babies alone.
Unfortunately you often see parents recommending unsafe bed nests, sleep pods etc not knowing how dangerous they are and they’ll say “I used it and we were fine”. Often it will be, until it isn’t.
I honestly think these things should be banned, same for cot bumpers. People think they must be safe if they’re sold so they take the warnings less seriously (or, as in this case, one parent was clearly unaware of the warning). Says it was on their mattress too which would make it even more dangerous than it being on the floor.
It’s an absolute tragedy and I can’t imagine what they are going through.
My husband’s colleague went on maternity over a month ago, and her baby died yesterday, seemingly a cot death AFAIK. Awful when babies die, can’t imagine what the parents go through.
Gorgeous boy may you rest in peace. Poor parents, I hope they are able to in some way come to terms with this.
It’s so awful , I reckon there are very few honest parents who can look back on their parenting and genuinely say they never did anything which would be considered “wrong” or a bit risky.
that’s absolutely gut wrenching that poor little soul, 🙁

That is so sad. I’m just confused what it is?? It’s not a play mat if it’s not flat. I think it would help to show a photo of what it is so other parents can understand the risk.
“Det Con Donna Tullock said: “We were told it was a sleeping pod but it appeared more like the underneath of a play mat and it did have a warning label on it reading ‘never leave a child under three unattended while using this toy’, so it was not an official sleeping pod.”
Sleeping pods aren’t meant to be used unattended anyway, so don’t understand this comment either.
😢
Forgive me, but why isn’t it safe to let a baby sleep on a mat, or a mat on top of a mattress? How can that cause a baby to suffocate?
Ffs….totally avoidable.
These stories are always so depressing, so avoidable NEVER leave a baby that’s still to young to support it’s bodyweight and move about efficiently alone in something so unsafe especially in a room on their own wtf.
