It almost sounds like a Klösschensuppe, if he were from the east. But since he’s from Stuttgart, it’s probably something similar, just with Spätzle pieces (Nudeln) instead of little Klösschen (Kartoffeln).
There is something called “Erasco Spätzletopf” in case he is refering to a soup that is sold in cans. I’m not really sure if you are looking for a recipe or a ready to eat meal in a can.
There is a soup called “Knöpflesuppe” which consists of “Knöpfle” which are small Spätzle. Knöpflesuppe is usually without meat, but of course you could add meat.
