The US is making and deploying more solar panels than ever before. The Inflation Reduction Act has caused solar panel manufacturing capacity to quintuple, revived domestic cell production, and sparked a surge in deployments. Solar is the cheapest source of new power generation by far.

  1. Will be interesting to see how much the incoming tariffs give them a boost. I doubt they’d ever get their products to be cheaper than those made in Southeast Asia otherwise.

  2. The dysfunctional Chinese electricity market gives Chinese manufacturers a huge boost in silicon wafers manufacturing. So much so, that China was the only country to have wafer manufacturers specially making wafers for solar cells. Other nations didn’t do it that way, as 99.99999% or higher purity wafers were the target for chips, wafers that didn’t meet that target would go towards solar cells.

Otherwise, Solar cell manufacturing can be competitively manufactured in the US. Now, US semiconductor suppliers and solar cell manufacturers have setup wafer manufacturing facilities, specially for solar cells. These were possible due to Obama era incentives and Biden’s IRA.

  3. As it was always meant to be.

Imagine what we could have had by now if we had done this 20 years ago.

  4. California has entered the chat… no it’s not lol.

  5. It’s still insanely expensive to install for residential customers.
