Does an incoming Red weather warning leave you scared or excited? (PS- stay safe everyone)

  1. Excited until I bought my first house, and now scared because I need to deal with the damage.

  2. Honestly it’s nothing new to me.. just more annoying fuckin wind throwing the bins around 💀

  3. I don’t really think about it other than making sure my garden stuff is put away and the cat is indoors by the evening.

  4. Considering I’m just outside of the red warning and the high wind gusts are going to last all day, I’m apprehensive to say the least.

  5. had to cancel my ferry trip to ireland yesterday morning. had already driven 3 hours (starting at 3am!) in the direction of wales, when i found out about storm darragh on saturday, which will probably end up with my return being cancelled and missing work on monday 🙁

so it makes me feel poopy

  6. Excited. I live by the sea and nothing is more thrilling than flood sirens going off. If it’s safe enough I can go over the road to the beach and watch stupidly huge waves from behind the flood barrier. It’s why I moved here!

  7. A red warning means it’s very likely that there will be a risk to life, so definitely more scared than excited.

  8. I love it, the sound of strong wind & rain is relaxing.

Although that quickly goes to shit once I realise I’ve not got any milk or bread in the house and have to brave it…

  9. Scared/sad because pretty much every time we get one of these, someone dies. Usually someone in a car hit by a tree.

Stay safe everyone and pat attention to the met office advice.

  10. I would be if i understood what the difference between amber and red winds actually are

  11. Our annual loss of roof tiles may come early this winter. Usually the only house on the street impacted, perfectly positioned for robust gusts it seems.

  12. Strong wind means power outages, so definitely not excited

  13. I got stuck in Hay-on-Wye two weekends ago – roads were flooded, trains were broken, rivers were overflowing. If Wales gets that much rain again it’s going to be awful. I hope they’re ok.

  14. The red rain warning in Scotland last year ended up being devastating to that local area. I had to go there a month later for work and the place still looked damaged!

  15. Not scared but certainly concerned. I’m in the amber zone, perhaps 5 miles from the red zone. My house is within falling distance of 4 large trees, with the main bedroom being the most vulnerable. My neighbour owns one of the nearest trees and confessed earlier this year that it is dangerous, having been weakened by dodgy pruning.

I’m currently contemplating staying overnight/tomorrow morning in a local ish, tree free hotel. Or sleeping in the dining room under a strong (steel framed) table.

    Hmm yes, a bit scary.

  16. I tied the kids trampoline to a tree in preparation so I’m feeling smug.

  17. I’m getting ready for some Big jet TV!
He’s going around! He’s going around!

  18. Neither, just annoyed as it’s going to cause issues somewhere along the lines.

  19. I have brought my motorbike into the kitchen so it’s safe.

Can’t say if I will be when she gets home from work.

  20. I’m scared for the people in the red, it could cause significant damage and no one should have to deal with all that, especially before Christmas

However it’s kind of exciting to experience crazy weather, I don’t know the last time I saw a red warning!

  21. Both. I love big weather, but I don’t want anyone getting hurt.

My in-laws got flooded by Bert, and are smack dab in the middle of the red zone. Fortunately this time they’ve gotten their flood barriers up pre-emptively. We’re hoping their location in a bit of a valley will help protect them from the wind.

  22. My parents live 5 miles out from the Severn bridge, will be an interesting night!

  23. I used to love storms, lived on the west coast of Scotland for 50 years where they could be quite bad. Live in cheshire now, storms no where near as bad yet they terrify me now

  24. It’s a bit surreal to know that almost 100% guaranteed somebody will die in that red area, who is currently living their life with no idea.

  25. I’m just outside the Amber and Red warning area. We’ve got some trees near our house, that could probably come down if it’s the worst case.

My main worry is our cat. He hates being kept inside before vet visits already and has already managed to headbutt his way out of the cat flap and damaged it. Hopefully we’ll be able to keep him inside tomorrow, but god knows how much he’ll complain.

  26. I’m currently testing a tent, so I welcome it. I don’t think the tent will welcome it

  27. I’m on a fishing boat fishing off the west coast of Scotland as we speak.

I’ve Got an interesting weekend ahead of me

  28. Concerned for the folks who *have* to be out and about in it, hoping people are sensible about it.

Not really too concerned for myself though, I’ve got nowhere to be so I’ll just get comfy at home and deal with the creepy sounds the tiny gaps around a couple of my windows make.

  29. On Anglesey here, worried about the NW direction of it, the harbour etc are generally built to withstand SW hales, the NW/NE winds give them a right battering

  30. One of the conservatory roof hatches was blown off our conservatory during storm Eunice in Feb 2022. Was a nightmare to cover the gap, until a tradesman was able to attend and charge £125 for a 15 min repair job. I looked into going through home insurance, excess was more than doing it privately. Now I have an enquiry claim thing on my home insurance for nothing. Fence panels got battered too. In Bristol so no, not looking forward to it.

  31. I live in a barn conversion right on top of a hill.

Digging out insurance paperwork in advance…

  32. I’m in the red zone. We haven’t had major damage from storms (yet) but I always get a but nervous when shit goes red.

  33. Not scared for myself – I’m in a very safe spot, minimal to no risk of flooding and no risk of tree windblow. Mostly just wheelie bin chaos. We might lose some roof tiles, but we rent so it’s not our problem.

However, we’re seeing how extreme these red warning events are becoming. People are dying from flash flooding events. Storm Arwen left so many vulnerable people in freezing homes for weeks. Heck, in summer we’re starting to see the extremes of heat too.

So mostly, I’m just sad. Experts have been telling us to expect this for decades, and the people in charge didn’t care enough to listen. People are going to lose possessions, homes, lives and loves. It could have so easily been avoided, and it’s only going to get worse.

  34. What is this sub call4d again? Casual UK except the North and north of Scotland, inner and outer hebrides, western Isles, Shetland, Orkney.

On a more serious note, anyone living in the red area,  stay indoors. My cousin was killed by a wind blown tree whilst out during a red warning a few years agi.

There will be an immensely small list of things that necessities you being out during a red warning.

  35. Looks like the Welsh are about to have a fun weekend.

  36. Extremely concerned. Terrified, to be quite honest. I’m not in the red warning area but not far from it, and I’m several hundred feet above sea level, completely exposed to the worst the weather can chuck at us. My chimney and roof are utterly fucked, if they both survive this it will be a miracle. I can’t stand the sound of the wind hammering against the house and roaring down the chimney so I either put earplugs in or listen to music on my earphones to drown it out, but I can’t do that this time because I’ve got a lingering ear ache from an ear infection from when i had to do the same during storm Bert. I’d honestly rather be outside than inside listening to it render me homeless.

  37. Who tf gets excited about the thought of gales that can destroy your roof.

  38. We’re in the red area and I’ve just spent an hour taking down all the Christmas lights I spent 2 hours putting up last weekend.
Anyone care to guess what I’ll spend 2 hours on on Sunday…?

  39. Wait is this for today/this weekend? We’ve only just replaced the fence posts and panels from storm Bert a fortnight ago lol

Edit, just checked the news. Balls.

  40. Scared. I have a roof… with tiles…

roof anxiety is a little known but common side effect of home ownership.

  41. Had a load of roofing jobs lined up but now it’s looking more like red wine and a fire
