  1. To nobody’s surprise, finally ran out of the same incest and murder narratives I guess?

  2. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Martin was asked about the status of the final novel in the long-running *A Song of Fire and Ice* series, *The Winds of Winter*, which fans have been hotly-anticipating the release of for well over a decade. “Unfortunately, I am 13 years late,” Martin responded. *”*Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time… But that’s still a priority. **A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know.** I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”

    No click necessary

  3. Professional writer who can’t finish a book after 13 years. What a hack. I have an easy solution for you, George – sit your ass down and write the book.

  4. weird how he waited till after the HBO payday to admit this.

  5. Even if he finishes Winds of Winter, he’s not going to finish A Dream of Spring. And he’s not even sure if the story will end with the 7th book. So we’re never going to see the official ending.

  6. Winds of Winter is supposed to be book 6 of 7, it’s not even intended as the final book. He’s obviously cooked on it and will likely never finish it.

  7. Can’t he just come up with a detailed outline and hire another writer to finish it? The cover would say George R. R. Martin with John Smith.

  8. I read the first book 25 years ago. I was so invested in them, for like 15 years…spent a lot of time on Westeros.org
It’s been a frustrating journey. Sometimes, I kinda hate him and sometimes I kinda feel sorry for him, but mostly I want him to get busy. Just write the gd book. Sit your a** down and make your fingers go clickety-clack.

  9. A project that is a decade late might never be finished? (Surprised face!)

  10. At this point it seems incredibly intentional. I don’t think he has the confidence to stick the landing and would rather reap the benefits of a good but unfinished series over one that ends up having a shit conclusion.

  11. He was always offended that people were afraid he would die before he could finish ASOIAF, but it’s true. He’s a 76-year old overweight man. I’d eat my shoe if he somehow gets The Winds of Winter out before he dies. Finishing the series altogether with A Dream of Spring? Absolutely off the table.

GRRM always wanted to write for television. The sole reason he got to work on ASOIAF was because he was frustrated that TV execs kept rejecting his drafts. He finally got to make his dream come true with HBO’s *World of Westeros* project. Compound that with the fact that he wrote himself into a corner with dozens of characters and dozens of plotlines, he sees no valid reason to finish these books. There’s also the possibility that Game of Thrones S8 was more accurate to the intended ending than we might believe, and the vitriolic reaction definitely won’t boost motivation.

Long story short, A Song of Ice and Fire will never see its last two books.

  12. It’s massively over hyped…. he releases it and everyone hates it.. he’s now a ‘failed’ writer with that series with a stupid ending. If he never finishes it, it remains ‘what could have been’.. and someone else will finish it.

  13. I’ve become convinced he fully intends not to, but saying so would be detrimental to sales and revenue.

  14. I often wonder if the show spoiled the story for him. At some point, they separated, and now he’s wondering how he can keep the vision in his head consistent while dealing with the noise of the history of the show.

  15. After years of telling people to shut up and he would finish.

  16. Finally he admits it, after what? A decade of insulting everyone who said he wouldn’t.

  17. Articles says final book but it’s only book 6 out of 7 planned.

  18. Cool. Just give it to Sanderson already. We’ll have both by summer.

  19. Look, can he either finish the books *or* shut up and disappear? Like, stop doing this to us, sir. We get it, you’re determined to do literally anything BUT write, so stop taunting us.

  20. George’s personally monthly mandated somehow get attention to George task has been completed. We will see you next year George.

  21. Guys, it’s not happening. He doesn’t know how to fix the hole he’s written himself into and doesn’t seem too interested in trying.

  22. No kidding, George? It’s only been 13 years don’t be so hasty.

  23. Because he wrote himself into a corner and I’m not sure he knows how to get out of it.

  24. He’s getting older and at this point, he’s probably weighing the pros and cons of being hunched over a keyboard for his remaining days trying to bang out two entire books instead of just enjoying a Mai Tai on some Caribbean beach.

    Can’t say I blame him…

  25. Stop giving this MF attention. He’s done, it’s over, and nothing more’s happening.

  26. The main reason I want him to finish at this point is to show how far away he is from the fanfiction revolving around chosen one tropes.

    It would be gloriously hilarious.

  27. The tv show ending was the book ending and he saw how bad everyone hated it so now he doesn’t wanna finish it
