  1. Just when you thought one lot of cheats occupying prime West End London retail space to sell awful tat (the sweet shops) was enough, turns out there’s another lot of scammers on the loose.

    Just absolutely ridiculous:

    > Originally from the southern Indian state of Kerala, the couple arrived in Oxford in 2020. According to Shafeeq Pallivalappil’s Facebook page, they found life hard at first and he had to work multiple jobs to meet the high cost of living in the UK.

    > Yet this summer Safoora Shafeeq filed documents at Companies House to become the legal owner and operator of four Harry Potter-themed shops in central London

    > One of these outlets owes Westminster council as much as £400,000 in unpaid business rates, according to individuals with knowledge of the shop’s operations, while three of her four shops do not currently charge the 20% VAT sales tax.

  2. This sounds like a rehash of the souvenir shops.

  3. How much do the council allow us to owe in council tax before sending old fat men round to collect? (Yes- I saw this on Channel 5)

Why are they able to owe so much?

  4. These stories pop up now and again and its the same issue each time: councils seem happy to overlook the problem, since the alternative is having loads of empty stores

Im sure its not a simple solution but it does seem like chasing these people out will just leave another problem

  5. Why these people can’t just run these businesses successfully for years AND pay their taxes beats me, they’d make more money.

A well-known middle-eastern series of restaurants in London started off by being something to launder drug money with and quickly the geezer discovered that the legit business was more lucrative than the drugs, great story.

  6. No shit, these things immediately replaced the American candy shops.

How the hell do they keep getting away with it?

But one failed direct debit for my council tax, and I’ll be threatened with a court order, lol.

  8. She’s is just a name and being used by a bigger gang. They will change the ownership again to someone else with no assets.

Business rates works difference to council tax – they would usually change the locks for that amount owed (lot lower then that too) – however this does not seem to be the case for some reason.

  9. I thought this was going to be about Emma Watson and the Panama papers.
