Unbelievable that he will likely be giving the contract to Amazon (who’ve been very good at avoiding taxes here), rather than Rolls Royce who have been developing reactors for decades. Seems like Labour are obsessed with labour as long as its foreign. At least he’s moving on from his solar-powered fever dreams which would have generated very little in the last few weeks – This is Britain after all.
The only redeeming quality is that this green bollocks will be his undoing, once and for all, rishi lite will be flushed out like a stinky shite.
If they manage pull this off, it would be a good legacy to leave behind. “We brought Britain back to nuclear power” is a good slogan.
Just make sure you actually follow through with the projects, and not just cancel them years in because they end up costing too much.
Real game changer would be to put the money into fusion. That would actually put us ahead of the rest of the world.
I don’t think they’re a solution sadly, at least no time soon. Imagine trying to get planning permission for 500 SMRs versus maybe half a dozen standard sized plants. They can still be dangerous, the old ones built around the 1960s-70s leaked and were hard to decommission and these ones haven’t been battle tested yet.
With the new types of SMRs, China has taken ~10 years to get their first one ready and they usually move at lightspeed. The most promising US SMR nearly tripled in cost and has been delayed by problems since the early 2000s as well. So there’s not much proof they’re going to arrive any quicker than full sized reactors, and there’s no real guarantuee they’ll be any cheaper.
If he was serious, the contract would be going to Rolls Royce who actually have a decent track record and are actually invested in the UK
Let me guess, they’ll get a guaranteed £ per kw that embeds sky high prices for another 50 years.
Am I the only one who’s terrified at the idea of letting companies fuck with reactors?? You’ve seen how Shit a job they do with eveything else but only with this they can only blow the place up
Yay!
