The solid biofuels market in the Republic of Moldova is set to be improved and aligned with European standards. A new regulation addressing this was approved during a Cabinet of Ministers meeting, initiated by the Ministry of Energy.

The regulation replaces the previous framework and outlines a comprehensive list of European standards that manufacturers must adhere to. It also provides market surveillance authorities with a clear framework for regulation and monitoring.

“Consumers need to have a clear understanding of the products they purchase,” stated Victor Parlicov, Minister of Energy. “The calorific value of biofuels is a key indicator that must be transparently communicated. This new regulation introduces strict rules for labelling and certification, ensuring that every user can make informed decisions and be confident in the quality of the product.”

The regulation aims to enhance biofuel quality, boost consumer confidence, support the development of the solid biofuel market and encourage investments in the sector. Expanding the use of solid biofuels within Moldova’s energy mix will help diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on imports.

According to the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED), Moldova currently has 42 active solid biofuel producers and over 300 public institutions using biomass for heating.
