Raygun: The Musical cancelled after Olympian issues legal threat

1. *[…] Raygun: The Musical was due to debut at Kinselas in Sydney’s Darlinghurst on Saturday evening, before performances scheduled at comedy festivals in Sydney, Melbourne and Edinburgh in 2025.*

   *But comedian Steph Broadbridge canned Saturday’s performance after Gunn’s lawyers sent several letters to the show’s promoter, iD Comedy Club, asking them to cancel the show and not use the name “Raygun” or use the athlete’s now famous “kangaroo dance”, as both were Gunn’s intellectual property.*

   *Gunn applied to trademark “RAYGUN” in August. The application remains under examination, however, the government agency which issues trademarks published an “adverse report” in October functionally knocking back the claim.*

   *[…] In a statement, Gunn’s management, Born Bred Talent, said it was “committed to protecting her intellectual property and ensuring that her brand remains strong and respected” and anticipated the trademarks would soon be registered.*

3. I feel like giving her all this attention is just fulfilling her wish.

5. Wasn’t she trying to bring people together or something? And here she is angry over her “intellectual property,” which has all the value – and none of the charm – of a kindergarten child playing around.

11. I actually got to see Steph perform a couple of songs, as she was testing them out at local comedy clubs, and i thought it was pretty funny, and all in good humour, would be a shame if it never saw the light of day.

18. If it is satire or comedy, at least in the US, that provides some protection. Obviously a crappy move, but she doesn’t seem to have a lot of other talent going on. I will be surprised if she is able to generate much profit off her “brand.”

19. I kinda feel bad that everyone is openly mocking her. Yes as an aussie the breakfasting was funny, yes memes were hilarious, but can we still with the public humiliation?

20. She has a point, you can’t let other people use your name and image to make money. No one here would be happy if it was them.

22. If she had put in the same effort into her performance as she has put into defending herself after people wouldn’t be making fun of her. She only cared to profit not compete.
