Ignorance.
Do we prefer it? Or is it simply what we have been given and forced to accept?

I wasn’t able to read due to paywall, but I can say there is only one reason and it’s because they don’t know any better. They prefer what they know and are familiar with. Another reason is fear, of crime, and of people different from them. Crime issues would of course be solved by people moving back to urban environments again, but they don’t understand that.
Probably because walkability effectively means high population density.

One of my professors is an environmental historian and hates car culture. He hates how cars are absolutely required for modern life. He tried to convince us all to talk to our representatives and get city planning to be more walkable or bikeable.
If that is what Americans prefer, why did homes in my walkable area triple in price from 2010 ?
