I randomly found this website https://www.thuisbezorgd.nl/en/courier/ which I guess is the Dutch version of our Just Eat. In my country Just Eat (and all other similar apps, the biggest being Uber Eats and Deliveroo) _do not_ pay that much. They pay _at most_ half of what’s displayed on that website, usually even less. Yes, it’s unacceptable, but that’s how it is.
Here we are self-employed, I gather it might be different for you guys? Virtually anyone can work for apps as long as they have a right to work and no criminal record. We have lots of unscrupulous drivers who do no hesitate to steal orders, there is no vetting or interviewing. And we have to stay online and look for offers, no offer = no pay, there is no minimum pay here. This is why any driver _has_ to work for all apps at once, or they will never have enough offers.
The most shocking part about the dutch website is this “compensation” thing depending on your vehicle. Here we always use our own vehicles (bikes, e-bikes, scooters mostly), and all expenses are ours, with no compensation whatsoever. Your scooter broke down? Too bad, comes with the job and you will never see a cent from whichever app you’re using.
So I’m really curious! Is this for real?
**How does it work in the Netherlands? Are delivery drivers self-employed? Is there any minimum pay? What’s that vehicle compensation thing? And is it really paid so well, or are they grossly overvaluing salaries?**
The compensation bit is part of the salary. Its basically a maintainance fee that they put in on top of the salary to make it look better and is based on your location and the distances you travel.
Otherwise, yeah, this is roughly as you can expect. However, as you are effectively “self employed”, keep in mind that this is without benefits. If you fall ill or whatever, youre out of luck.
Hope it helped!
This is like Uber eats? Or this other one? It’s kinda hot or miss all depends how much time you was acctauly driving and delivering food
As I know friends that tried and made a lot I also know few that was struggling
Barely above minimum. Educate yourself on how much your life will cost here
This is just above minimum wage for 21 and older. So yeah… they can do this….
For that you need to deliver 40hrs. Unsure whether there is always work for that, and whether waiting time is also work time or paid as much
i think it is including “vakantiegeld” and paid time off. and then it is a few cent above minimum wage
This is not a good deal. If it’s ZZP, then you won’t have workers insurance, you need to pay for your own pension and if you get sick you get nothing. You pay a lot more taxes than you normally would because you also pay employers’ taxes. A normal office or supermarket job for €2400 per month is a much better deal.
Hell no
Just a heads up; that’s marginally above the minimum they are obligated to pay you, considering those bonuses for your bike or car are included but really are needed for stuff like maintenance, fuel/electricity.
So they don’t pay well at all. Minimum per 1 january 2025 will be 2438 euros a month based on 40 hours.
Doubt ‘delivering’ is going to be his only task at the company.
Yea, but this is just if you are 99 years old.
There are no more food delivery platforms in the Netherlands.
There are food delivery companies that you work for. Food delivery is a job, not a gig economy thing.
It’s it possible that you’d make this when working 40 hrs a week for them?
Sure.
That’s only 700 euros a week. And you can be damn sure that it includes vacation pay, holiday bonus, weekend bonus and anything else that you are legally entitled to. It won’t work out to much above minimum pay. You can also be sure that they won’t give you 40 hours. You’ll probably get stuck at 12 hours, or a contract where they give you your hours on a weekly basis.
I have been a courier at takeaway, Takeaway offers max 36hrs contracts. During peak-season, which is now, making this salary or even more is realistic.
Application goes by Randstad and you will receive salary weekly. Keep in mind (depends on which city you work) that takeaway is likely to ask you to provide your own bike.
Here is where the shit part starts: they will ask/recommend to use a swapfiets. But swapfiets is around the shittiest companies on earth. You are not allowed to cancel your swapfiets subscription for the first six months and swapfiets will bring you in with a rate of 80 euros per month for an ebike.
Once you are set, swapfiets will charge you double or maybe even triple as you use your swapfiets for commercial purposes, which is not allowed. Swapfiets are some nasty bastards. Besides, their bikes are of inferior quality. You will visit them at least twice a week with bike trouble.
When peak-season ends, from february on, there will be more burdens than pleasures for you will hardly be scheduled. Especially when you do not have a 36hrs contract. When you have a six hrs contract, which will be recommended during your intake, you can consider yourself a lucky mf if you will have even ten hrs a week.
TLDR:
During intake ask for a 36 hrs contract, if they deny: refuse.
If you have to provide an own bike: refuse.
Most important and I cannot emphasize this enough: avoid swapfiets at any fucking cost.
Good luck!
I work for the company. Yes, you will get more or less the indicated amount, but you are only taking home the minimum wage at best, rest goes into your vehicle maintenance.
Yes!*

-There’s a chance you won’t get a 40 hour contract.
-a big part of that is vehicle allowancez which you need for when your vehicle gets broken.
Its just minimum wage + vacation money + vacation hours, so around €16.5/hour. Not that special.
In the winter there are bonuses of around €2/hour.
This excludes vehicle compensation of 19ct/km for ebike.
Gross maybe
Salary sounds good until you realise what you lay for rent and groceries
You should retire man. Not an age too be scooting around
