I’m so fucking tired of a few absolute fucking morons on social media being national news.
Can we just switch off the internet please? It’s been down here for most of the day, along with the electricity, and I feel happier for it.
Dr (congrats BTW) Louks’ work isn’t at issue here, neither is the behaviour of the Uni – the problem if the horde of RW grifters and sh1tflies who thought that could mine a bit of clout by wilfully misunderstanding her work.
It’d be bigger news if she didn’t get misogynistic abuse after posting of her success on that cesspool
It was somewhat amusing to see just how much the culture keyboard warriors had misunderstood her thesis – she’s a English literature student and her thesis is quite run of the mill (the use of negative scent descriptors in English literature to describe women and minority groups) but somehow a large chunk of the initial trolls thought she was doing an anthropology or politics degree.
In todays episode of ‘headline co-opted by the far right’
(Rhetorical) Question: Why do people seek out things that annoy them, then get in a rage of their own making? I remember Graham Hancocks newest ‘documentary’ premiering on Netflix, you know what I did? I DIDN’T WATCH IT! I knew I’d end up wanting to punch my telly, so I just didn’t do it to myself.
Not that this is on the same level just to add before someone points that out 🙃
Its very simple everyone. Woman + Education = Witch.
>“Ally has told us that the majority of the 11,000 comments and 20,000 retweets are from people showing ‘generosity, intellectual curiosity, and kindness’.”
So a minority of idiots generate a headline. Feels like we should start concentrating on the majority and ignoring this minority. I’d bet 99% of them are just bored trolls looking for a reaction. I think its lazy journalism tbh. Why not name and shame people? This is the journalist version of the police trawling through twitter arresting poeple for offensive messages…..
It came as no surprise to me. X is full of misogynistic right wing morons. To be fair she has ridden the wave well and lots more people know who she is than they did before and that does matter, even in academia.
“Ally has told us that the majority of the 11,000 comments and 20,000 retweets are from people showing ‘generosity, intellectual curiosity, and kindness”
They’re coming for everyone (or their loved ones) not just the “others”.
There are very few spaces online where we’re not vulnerable to this nonsense.
I’ve had abusive and dirty messages through selling (normal) clothes on Facebook marketplace a few times. Made Facebook reports on the men, Facebook decided no issue. Reported to the police, they said nothing to pursue. I get that there are bigger things going on but it seems being online gives so many a license for scumbaggery.

Is it any surprise that Musk got upset?
It’s very sad, and it should not happen, although not altogether surprising. I’ve seen on places like Instagram men throwing out the misogynistic hate against women for doing really normal things like screaming in a car accident, or discussing the grief process after the death of their husband.
There is a subsection of very vocal men online who seem determined to hate women regardless of what they do. And certainly a woman getting a PhD is going to annoy the hell out of them. Enough apparently to send rape and death threats.
I’d love to say it’s bots, but if you look at their profiles they’re very real people. And honestly, it fits with tag life experiences. I have seen stories where some women have taken to actually finding their families and sharing some of the comments with them. It’s pretty scary to share a world with people who have that level of hate towards you, like people talk about misandry online, and obviously that’s never good, but what I see labelled as misandry is usually like “I’m fed up with men making me feel unsafe, I just can’t stand them anymore”, while misogyny is like “that bitch dares to live her life how she wants, she deserves to be raped”. There’s a whole different level of scary.
I find her thesis subject actually very interesting.
I read a few pages from her work.
The internet is kinda right it’s pretentious and nitpicky and unimportant. HOWEVER, it’s an English Lit PHD, it’s supposed to be pretentious and nitpicky and unimportant! If you can’t be pretentious in your English Lit thesis then when???
It was funny listening to the Russian agent Tim Pool rant about her. First he said there was nothing to write about in that topic and tehn contradicted himself by starting to talk about smells lol.
On the other hand, I really hope this was fully privately funded and the government didn’t give any money to sponsor this research. It’s interesting and it’s good that it exists but I don’t want to be paying for it.
It looks to me like the misogonist response she got were led by commentators that mischaracterized her as arguing that using descriptions of smell is racist or sexist? How do such reactions and such hasty mischaracteriztions even arise?
Wonder what the comments would be if it was a man posting this about finishing his PhD?
All of the misogyny and personal abuse is really awful.
There is however a right to be critical of the way in which the humanities have been taken over with critical justice theory and intersectional thinking.
A paper or PhD in these studies is now – take an obscure issue + take an identity group (or two) Write about how language and power has ‘systematically’ oppressed said group.
‘The impact on Detroit bus routes on the queer community.’
‘The politics of museum architecture on post colonial society’
Etc etc
Universities are now factory lines pushing out the great cannon of this critical justice theory / wokeism / intersectional stuff.
It would be fine, I guess, if it just stayed in Universities (although anyone who disagrees finds themselves pushed out) but it’s political endeavour to reshape society into different identity tribes that the great authorities of institutions and state treat differently to deliver ‘equity’ is everywhere.
Personally I wish her all the best she’s just a cog in this intellectual movement but I reserve my right to be critical of the entire school of thought
X is full of truly hateful fuckwits, but one thing that people need to keep in mind is that verified members get paid for engagement. Not for making good points, not for being nice, engagement.
80% of the flat earthers on X are not flat earthers, they are baiting for engagement.
80% of the racists on X are not racists, they are baiting for engagement.
80% of the misogynists on X are not misogynists, they are baiting for engagement.
By paying attention to these people you are paying them to continue. The media with their coverage of these stories are paying them to continue.
If you haven’t already done so, just delete X. It is the only way to fight back.
Got to love how calling out a bullshit PHD is misogyny.
Writing absolute fucking dreck for a thesis and being called on it is not misogyny.
“Last week, Cambridge PhD student @allylouks published this photo on X“
The sooner everyone leaves the cesspool that is X the better.
Given that it got featured by Tim Pool (for those that don’t know, a far right, moronic streamer), I’m not surprised. For the little that it’s worth, they’ll get distracted by some other pathetic outrage soon enough.
Sadly this is what Musk and Trumpism encourages, the worst impulses, the darkest misogynistic hatred is now seen as something to cheer on.
>“Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose”,
Understand that this is not an antiwoke or misogyny comment:
Jesus you can get a PhD in anything these days can’t you?
I suspect the only “misogyny” this woman is enduring, is people telling her she’s wasted her life studying and writing about something that will never contribute anything of value to the world around her. The truth hurts sometimes.
Before even looking j knew it would be on Twitter
You ever think it’s weird how Twitter did the same hate speech flouting EU laws that rumble did but somehow only the latter had its app banned?
