4. My daughter is the oldest of all the cousins in her family.
   She’d tell each of them on their 20th birthday “congratulations on beating teen pregnancy “

I come from a family like this and I broke a lot of unhealthy cycles in my family by being the first to do many things (education, career building, not become an addict, overcome tons of trauma, have nearly finished a PhD., etc) and I would never discuss breaking those patterns this openly for fear of making my family feel judged for their choices or that they are less than. I especially wouldn’t want the world to know about my family’s less than commendable patterns in case those are shame triggers for my family members. And ultimately the only purpose it serves is to make myself look better/stronger/more intelligent for not repeating their patterns.

   It’s ok to discuss your story but really, to be kind, leave anyone out of it that you’re comparing yourself to to how far you’ve come — especially when you have a national reach with your story
