  1. A rally in support of Russia in Belgrade

Several thousand citizens gathered on Friday, March 4, in Belgrade for a rally in support of the Russian Federation, after the country’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine, during which about 2,000 civilians have been killed so far. The Belgrade protest was organized at the invitation of the extreme right-wing organization from Serbia, “People’s Patrol”.

The Serbian and Russian anthems were sung at the gathering, and some of those present pointed out the flags of Russia, Serbia, as well as the symbols of the Chetnik movement. Also, among the flags and slogans carried by the participants in the protest, posters with the symbol Z, one of the insignia of the Russian military forces on the Ukrainian battlefield, were noticed.

The gathered people chanted “Serbia, Russia, we don’t need a Union”, alluding to Serbia’s membership in the European Union.

After the address of the speakers, the attendees walked to the Embassy of Russia and the diplomatic mission of Belarus.

According to Radio Free Europe (RFE) reporters, the staff of the Russian Embassy greeted the protesters from the window. Among other things, they gathered there, chanting derogatory slogans against NATO, the LGBT population, and shouts of “Crimea is Russia, Kosovo is Serbia” could be heard, and they shouted the name of the convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic.

Some of the speakers in front of the Russian Embassy said that from this protest they want to tell the West “that Serbia is sitting on only one, Russian chair”.

    Serbia’s attitude towards the invasion

Russia’s military attack on Ukraine began on February 24, and since then Kiev and other cities have been under fierce rocket attacks.

Moscow claims that the targets are military facilities aimed at “demilitarization” and “denazification”, but footage and images from Ukrainian cities show the opposite. More than 2,000 civilians have died since the invasion began, including more than 20 children. Almost a million people have fled the country.

On March 2, at the session of the UN General Assembly, Serbia joined the condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The UN resolution regrets Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and demands that Russia immediately stop threatening and using force against Ukraine and immediately, completely and unconditionally, withdraw all military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

The resolution was adopted with 141 votes in favor, five against and 35 abstentions.
