  1. I find it baffling there is such a lack of understanding or empathy for the Syrians celebrating the removal of Assad, the dictator that upended their lives and forced them to flee their homeland. The man that killed countless of their countrymen and imprisoned others with no sight on release.

This is a monumental day in Syrian history. And these people finally have some perspective on returning to a safe country. Of course, the future is uncertain. HTS, the leading rebel group has a history of allegiance to Al Qaeda but it’s present stance is a lot more complex than that. We will see if Syria is able to transition into something akin to a moderate Islamic republic. For the sake of the Syrian people I hope they will.

  2. After the brutal Assad dictatorship they celebrate a new extreme Islamist regime. Quality substitution.

  3. So glad this dictatoral regime is over. Now they can finally have some fundamentalist islamists to govern the country and make it a decent place. /s

EDIT: I mean not they exactly because they are too comfortable in Germany.

  4. I’m confused. Why is Al-Qaeda called a ‘terrorist group’ when it attacks in the West and a ‘freedom fighter’ when it does so in the East?

  5. Isn’t the guy under control literal terrorists with 10mil dollars on his head?

  6. I’m glad the Assad tyranny is over. It was *long* overdue!! That family has caused so much pain to so many Syrians. But I’m also worried about what comes next. Ideally, Syria would now become a democracy with regular elections and religious extremism kept at bay. But that will probably not happen. I’ll give it 2 years before it’s a full blown islamic dictatorship.

  7. I’m delighted for these people. But at the same time worried..if there’s one thing the middle East does badly it’s power vacuums. Forgive my cynicism but there’ll be some dog shit government and (probably) dictator in there soon enough and we’ll go round the circle again.

  8. If falling of a dictator or some unofficial forces take over a city in Middle East means its now “over” for those honking or here in this thread believing, I’ve got bad news for you.

  9. I’ve seen a lot of footage on Twitter showing some Syrians leaving, with videos of them expressing gratitude to the Turkish state for hosting them but stating that it’s now time to return to “free Syria.” There are queues at the border, and Turkish customs are allowing them to cross as long as they don’t have any outstanding debts to the state, such as fines or taxes. They’re departing under the condition of a definitive return, which results in their Turkish refugee status being revoked.

  10. All comments condemning refugees are written as if from a single template with the characteristic “,right?” at the end. Of course, they ignore the fact that it was Assad’s mass murders that started the emigration crisis in Europe.

  11. It’s fucking annoying to listen to, but honestly, they can celebrate however they need to for now, this is a monumental moment for Syrians everywhere

  12. Great. They can all go home now, right? …. right?

  13. r/Europe extremely nuanced comment section never disappointing, such cunning opinions in here.

  14. Wow this comments section is garbage. 24 year brutal tyrant overthrown and it is just negativity and pessimism. Yeah things are uncertain from here but I guess it’s too much to give even just a bit of validation to the happiness of the Syrian people for even just a moment.

  15. Please excuse my ignorance. I am asking this in good faith: what is the reason for the celebration of the Assad regime’s collapse in Germany?

  16. I’m going to miss them after they leave now that their country is free!

  17. Since they are celebrating the jihadist takeover, I assume they will return home ASAP?

  18. Have we already forgotten how well the much celebrated “Arab Springs” have turned out?

  19. Im curious as to where the ones who celebrated the fall of Saddam are now. And is Iraq or the world a better place without Saddam. The same is coming. Assad might be a dictator in the eyes of the west. He kept the Islamists in check.
