  1. So the objective is to disallow event sponsorship by a fossil-fuel brand? Where does that end? The World Cup sponsor Hyundai-Kia has a fleet that’s 94% fossil fuels, and Qatar Airlines surely doesn’t have a small GHG footprint. And what about the sponsors of Wycombe’s team – should fans be asked to never buy Origin Global’s fossil-intensive aluminum bi-fold doors? Maybe there’s much more opportunity to decouple fossils from sport than just getting Aramco’s name out of the stadium graphics. And pulling on that one thread might unravel the entire substance of the business that is sports.

    Of course each athlete should be able to freely speak about their beliefs, and a collective voice can possibly influence management to drop sponsorships. I’m only suggesting that there’s a long row to hoe if you’re expecting to make any meaningful change in fossil’s relationship with football.
