A disaster hidden by the authorities which are deeply involved in these things. One of the big shots involved in it is [Gheorghe Flutur](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gheorghe_Flutur) the president of the county council of Suceava – [here together with Klaus Iohannis the president of Romania](https://image.stirileprotv.ro/media/images/680xX/Sep2014/61574161.jpg) – and one of the biggest and most powerful bosses in the National Liberal Party – the party which holds power today in Romania.
Haven’t watched it yet but the drone footage at the minute and half mark (on thumbnail) is very obviously shot at a forest plantation. Can’t really blame anyone for chopping that patch down.
If that particular example had been let’s say prime mixed leafed forest it would have been different.
“Lungs of Europe, Romania” you mean because of the cigarettes?
I wish all EU countries agreed to set up truly wild EU national parks like they have in the US. Could use common resources to manage
No mention of IKEA roles in the illegal felling of trees in this quick report. It’s not just gangs involved.
Subsidized biomass generation is driving this.
Biomass used to be small scale burning of wastes. Wood shavings, used oil, agricultural waste, etc.
Now, we are subsidising large scale biomass burning to “reduce our emissions”, so whole Swedish trees get burned in Dutch and German coal plants.
Normally, those trees would be used for lumber and paper.

So now people have to find wood in other forests
And this is the result.
