  1. Ofcourse we aren’t – we have a very very mild climate. It would be mad to have designed for extreme weather.

However the writing on the wall with climate change looks like we will get wetter, colder and more extreme storms – now is the time to be planning for this.

  2. This country is never ready for snow in winter, so it has no chance with anything else.

  3. This country is unprepared for anything either side of grey and drizzly.

Edit: spelling. I will spell check one day, but it is not this day!

  4. I feel like this news story has been running for 50 years

  5. I’ve been without power since 2pm yesterday. According to SP energy networks it isn’t expected to be reinstated until 9pm tomorrow. So 55 hours in December without power.

Can concur that the UK isn’t ready for this/able to deal with it effectively.

  6. We’re not ready for 2 inches of snow EVERY single year.? At what point of common sense did anyone think we were ready for extreme weather? Lol..

  7. What is it with Britain and hyping up these storms to make them sound like we’re living in Florida during hurricane season or something.

  8. I heard on the radio someone was doing a park run the morning the storm started

  9. I’ve lived through many hurricanes and when I came to the UK it was sort of refreshing not to have to worry about that stuff anymore. But last night I could feel and hear the wind pressure against my windows/door, I had to do some Macgyver shit cuz the shed window busted and the rain was loud as, and Apple weather said that was ‘moderate’ rain last night. I ain’t been fearful like that in years.

  10. Can someone shed some light on something that this country IS ready for?

  11. The roads that flooded in our town were all the result of the grids being blocked with debris. More regular street sweeping in autumn would probably help significantly with the minor issues like the odd flooded road.

  12. This country has never been ready for anything more than a stiff breeze apparently. Entire generations have been failed by an economic and political class that simply don’t care for ordinary workers.

  13. Well no one is ready for climate change are they ? And it least when it all turns to shit we will have water

  14. Storm Darragh was not extreme. We’ve experienced several winter storms like that a year for as long as I can remember.

  15. Saying this when in the middle of said storm is funny.

  16. Of course country that is famous for rain is not prepared for rain.

  17. My wheelie bins are the only things struggling to cope with this storm.

  18. The country that is surprised when it snows every year? The country that cancels trains when it rains? Weird that

  19. What is this headline? USA build houses in tornado paths and they still get blown to bits. No houses are ready for extreme weather, that’s why it’s extreme

  20. I was in Cardiff at the weekend and got the scary storm warning, went out into Cardiff on Saturday morning and it was mildly unpleasant. Definitely not stay-at-home dangerous.

There had clearly been some strong gusts overnight, and I wouldn’t have wanted to venture down to Penarth for a walk on the prom particularly, but I’m sorry, it feels like there was a huge over-reaction to a nasty winter storm. It’s not like they were ever *that* rare.

And I’m absolutely not denying that climate change is happening, and affecting the weather. But to read the news this weekend you’d think The Rapture was coming.

  21. It’s not just the country that has to be prepared for the sheer variety of UK weather, the public needs to be prepared as well, and the government has to help the public do this, and that includes helping reducing CO2 output too.

  22. We survived the Great Storm of 1987 so Darragh was basically a walk in the park.
