  1. If the coal tips where dealt with properly in the first place there wouldnt be these risks but as usual with everything In this country it’s done as cheap as possible and left for future generations to deal with the consequences.

I can also picture the estate agent making the sale

“lovely 3 bedroom house with a lovely view but there is a slight chance that a landslide will destroy your house and possibly bury you alive… anyways it’s up for sale now for £200k are you interested?”

  2. Estate agents will try to sell the landslide as a selling point and triple the figures

  3. To those saying ‘oh well you should have acknowledged the risk and not bought that house’. The problem is that there was very poor information on the location of coal tips until Welsh Government released the comprehensive map last year. So I think it’s plausible you may not have been able to identify the risk. Anyone can now look it up: https://www.gov.wales/find-disused-coal-tips

There is a very interesting proposal in Bedwas from a group who propose to clear a tip and pay for it without any government money. Instead they plan to sell the coal they clear away. I know climate campaigners don’t like that, but imo, if I live next to a tip and central gov won’t come up with the money, I want it gone in the quickest and most efficient way. Gov should come up with the money but looks like private funding might be the only way. https://caerphilly.observer/news/1043835/bedwas-the-controversial-plans-to-clean-up-coal-tips-explained/
