Looking at NATO map, the only non-NATO countries on Russia’s western front are Ukraine, Belarus and Finland – out of these Finland is the only country that has not been attacked or that does not have Russian military in it

  1. I would like to add at least not yet. But I think, when looking at this map, you could see russia being scared of Finland… I mean how are they supposed to protect themselves from a country that is 51 times smaller than them, with 1/37 the amount of active military personnel and no nukes?

  2. Plenty of Russian military here, tens of thousands, all located around east border about 6ft under.

  3. Finland might look like an easy country to invade, but in reality it has a huge military reserve of trained civilizians and well developed defensive stratagy. Reserves combined with the strategic use of choke points, closing off roads, good knowledge of the nature and encircling technique (motitus) probably makes Finland a lot harder to occupy that expected.

As seen in history, it might be easier to attack during summer and gain significant ground, but when the winter hits the logistics of the aggression become much harder and the natives gain significant advantage. The strategy is based on slowing down the enemy and giving them ground. When the logistic chain becomes longer and weather conditions start to become worse, the military encircles the enemy cuts off the supply chain and leaves armies stranted during winter. At least in theory…

  4. Finland is probably not in Russia’s interest. At least from a risk/reward perspective. For some reason I still would’t oppose being part of NATO. Not even if that means Finland would need to help defend other countries against Russia.

  5. I would also like to add, if Russia was to attack, say, Poland or Estonia; would you want to NOT help them? I think most people agree that we should go there with our miltary and stop the war before it spreads here. And the easiest way to make sure is to sign the security guarantee.

  6. Finland doesn’t have any gas or oil that Russia wants. We don’t have jihadists or other extremist plotting against Russia. Neither do we have a significant ethnic minority of Russians living in Finland.

More or less no kind of incentive for Russia to invade Finland.

  7. Russia can never invade a EU country. You are living in dreams. If it did it would mean it can invade the entire Europe so EU would not allow this or at least try to avoid at all costs.

  8. We have a business relationship that benefits both countries more than war.

NATO gives protection but also gets Finland involved in wars in the middle east.

  9. Oh my GOD!! This is brand new information! Aw, geez!! How did we not know this?!?!

I can’t wait to tell this bit of knowledge to all my comrades from my conscription days. I bet they did not know about Russia at all!

  10. Amazing how NATO can border its enemy and not invade. Not invading your neighbor is one of the hardest things to do.

  11. Also, out of those three, the only one that was not part of the USSR. Also the only one with a modern military with fully modernized machinery. Also the only with that is in EU.
