I have noticed that on road signs, and sometimes even [logainm.ie](https://logainm.ie) have translations for place names that don’t quite make sense.

Because of this, I have created a subreddit: r/logainmneacha to get the English names, and produce the Irish from there. It is thorough (dictionaries, pronunciation, and the geography of the area could be checked) so no slapping down what you know.

If you’re interested, come along and make a submission . There’s no rush, it’ll be finished when it’s finished.

Edit: To clarify, I mean getting the correct Irish from the anglicised name.

  1. Had a look at the spreadsheet but I’m not sure what the column headings are meant to mean. Which is meant to be the correct translation?

  2. The Irish place names on road signs aren’t “translated” from English to Irish, they’re the original Irish name of the place. Sometimes the anglicised name or the English name of a place doesn’t directly match the Irish name, but that doesn’t make the Irish name wrong.
