I'm going to be in Narvik from 29th December to 4th January. The idea was we could double up on experiences and hopefully see the Northern Lights, as well as get some snowboarding in.
They have posted the following up today on their socials:
Original:
Facebook translated:
"Front hill: 60% enough snow Family hill: 70% enough snow Andrebakken: 10% enough snow Heistrasse Heis 1: Not started, tends to artificial snow Kids area: Not started, needs artificial snow
There will be a stable cold period after the mild weather period we are currently in, and the goal is to use this to produce finished in the lower part. Next, the snow will be dosed out, the trail profiles will be made, and the slopes will be prepared. Of course, this will take some time, but the goal is to be able to open the plant by Christmas
The terrain park will be set up during January, as our first priority now is to produce enough snow in the slopes as long as we have cold weather.
Fjellheis restauranten and gondola opens for the season on Saturday 11. January, and following the plant's opening hours"
I really wanted to get at least near the top of the mountain for the spectacular view, but I am now not sure if that will be possible, if the Gondola is not open? I was hoping they might at least open it for a couple of days over the Christmas holiday period, despite it not being in full season, but it doesn't sound like they will. I was wondering if anyone has experience of Narvikfjellet and if this is something they usually do? I (wrongly) assumed the cable car was open all year round so people could at least enjoy the view. If they had a good run of snow, would they look to open early? (I have tried to ask them these questions direct, but no answer)
If the Gondola does not open, does anyone know which parts of the piste map are likely to be open? (image attached)
I'm contemplating changing my plans and perhaps just flying to Oslo instead and then going somewhere like Trysil that looks like it will be fully open, but at the sacrifice of potentially seeing the Northern Lights.

There’s been no snow buddy. Narvik should be able to get some stuff open probably the lower slopes but you never know.
Trysil currently has one lift running, one a red run and a blue. Usually this is what would be open a month ago. There’s been a fair bit more snow out west and central but it’s pretty bleak.
There’s another place for downhill skiing etc in Narvik: https://fnugg.no/ankenes/
It’s smaller, but currently at least partially open.
Another option:
42 km away from Narvik, and accessible by bus or train: Riksgränsen, just across the border to Sweden: https://riksgransen.se/en/skidakning/
71 km from Narvik, in Sweden, and also accessible by public transport: Björkliden, with skiing and various Northern Lights activities:

It’s also possible to take the bus to Tromsø and take their cable car. It’s a popular spot for Northern Lights viewing.

(In any case, maybe you could send an e-mail to the Narvikfjellet information office, for more info?)
I can’t help you with this, I just wanted to say that this looks a lot like the Club Penguin map and brought back a lot of good memories
