  1. ***The Telegraph reports:***

Germany and Austria have frozen Syrian asylum applications in the wake of the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

All asylum requests from Syrian citizens will be put on hold until there is more clarity on political developments in the country, Berlin’s migration office said on Monday.

Syria was the most common country of origin for asylum seekers in Germany this year, with 72,420 applications submitted by December.

More than 47,000 asylum requests from Syrian citizens are still pending a decision.

Austria has also said it has suspended Syrian asylum applications, and its interior ministry has been instructed to start preparing the deportation of Syrians already living there.

  2. I suppose they always leave out the last part of Merkel’s 2015 quote:

    > Wir schaffen das **_nicht_**

  3. Piece of Shits! Situation is still not Great, did they even established a contact with current goverment?

  4. Expected result tbh. It’s genuinely impossible to predict the development of the situation in Syria and certainty is exactly what is needed for the judicial process to grant asylum otherwise people will sue against them being denied asylum for years to come. Being able to advertise tougher refugee regulations for the coming election is a nice bonus too

  5. Moscow seems willing to accept Syrian refugees. MAybe they should try to go there

  6. That’s great most of them are economic migrants and not refugees .

  7. Thats straight up a false narrative when it comes to Germany. I dont know about Austria. They havent just frozen the claims but also the denial of said claims because the government cant make any informed decisions for the refugees at the moment because its entirely unclear on how things play out the next few weeks. So they are waiting it out for now.

Stop quoting sites like the telegraph or politico. They are there for the headline but not for the truth.

  8. You either act almighty and grant everyone, promote human rights or you don’t. Don’t do it half and realise it’s a big burden to your own finances and then tell your neighbours or other nation around the world why they didn’t help.

    Hypocrites nations.

  9. This makes sense. They’re saying they won’t do anything until the situation stabilizes. No acceptances *or* rejections.

  10. Why do they all go to Europe and not the Gulf states?

  11. Good, I hope a big share of the Syrian people can go home now. It’s good for everyone.

It removes a huge burden from the social system in Germany and improves the security situation. Maybe after that we also can get an acceptable peace deal in Ukraine, which also would mean that millions of Ukrainians can go home (even though they don’t cause as much trouble as people from Syria, but there is also a huge burden on the social systems because of them).

Who knows? Maybe 2025 could become better than 2019-2024 after all?

  12. well well well… everybody who makes is there now needs to go back? no more welcome? bad germany…

  13. The torygraph misleading here as usual.

Because not just claims have been halted but all decisions, meaning also asylum *claim denials* etc. until the situation becomes clearer.

    >“In view of this unclear situation, it is right that the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has today imposed a freeze on decisions for asylum procedures that are still ongoing until the situation is clearer.”
