    A far as I can tell, if any NATO troops are deployed in Ukraine and attacked by Russia it would NOT trigger article 5 of the NATO treaty. They must be attacked on NATO territory.

    So it doesn’t give Ukraine any serious guarantee except that whichever NATO member’s troops are killed by Russia in a potential attack, might peeve off that nation to do something a bit more direct than providing aide to Ukraine.

    Even then, if Putin called ahead and told the nation his troops would be attacking in 48 hours regardless of if the foreign troops are there or not… that nation could just pull its troops out and abandon Ukraine.
