The Princess of Wales made international headlines this year and stirred a conversation about privacy and health for public figures. In January, Kate Middleton was hospitalized for two weeks for a “planned abdominal surgery” and Kensington Palace said she would be out of the public eye until Easter. But after conspiracy theories circulated online in March about Middleton’s whereabouts, the royal put the rumors to rest by revealing that she had been diagnosed with cancer. In September, Middleton announced that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment. Middleton was previously on the TIME100 list of Most Influential People in 2013, and one of the runners-up for Person of the Year in 2011.

I know she’s not gonna win . It will most probably be Trump 🥴 . Yulia Navalnaya or Claudia sheinaum should be deserving winner.

  1. Why isn’t Gisele Pelicot nominated ? She’s the one who should get the title this year. The amount of braveness she has shown during the horrible trial is mind blowing

  2. She is a very rich woman who got ill. I don’t see any changes in her charitable/ outward behavior since she’s been ill.

  3. the year Kate does almost nothing as the year she’s nominated for Person of the Year says a lot about the Person of the Year title.

  4. The US president always wins when they win an election. It will be Trump 🙁 this year

  5. She deserves the title. She is a good mother and a supportive wife to the future heir. Most of all, she is a dedicated royal.

  6. Why??? Her claim to fame this year is being caught up in a media circus. And releasing a a few very cheesy but heartfelt videos.

She has my complete sympathy having to deal with cancer, while trying to raise three young children and being the subject of soooo much media glare. But, there’s nothing she’s done with this position that’s been that noticeable or leadership like.

I think much of the criticism aimed at her this year was really outsized compared to anything she’d done. But, I also think something like “person of the year” would also be accolades ridiculously outsized compared to anything she’s done.

(And quite frankly, it’s a USA driven recognition. Yes, they select global people all the time but ones who globally impact the USA as well as everyone else. She’s kinda a minor celebrity figure in the USA.)

  7. The conversations sparked by Gisele Pelicot’s case and the bravery she showed in waiving her right to anonymity and insisting on a public trial were a much bigger topic this year and more deserving of a place for Time’s Person of the Year than Kate having cancer.

  8. Wow this sub is full of people who hate Kate. Not a good look.

  9. Wow, time already for the “actually, it’s about who has the greatest impact on culture, not who did the most!” discourse? The year has flown by.

I think Kate’s nomination makes sense within that parameter, but I also think it’s hard to calibrate how much of an impact she had on people who aren’t already royal watchers. Her “disappearance” was a huge cultural crossover, but I don’t know how much impact she’s had since then. Recency bias at play here, but I’d argue the guy who shot the UHC CEO will ultimately have a greater cultural impact for 2024 than Kate did.

  10. Why? Because she had cancer? Obviously that’s an awful thing, but something like 350,000 people a year are diagnosed with cancer in the UK alone. She’s hardly special…

  11. As a Mexican, Claudia Sheinbaum just won because her party is very populist.
