  1. Canadian here. A friend of mine had this shipped to me for Christmas because I like to try new foods. I know it’s supposed to smell god awful when I open it but I’ve got some questions. I know it’s fermented and under pressure, but does the can normally bulge so much? Also there’s some rust on the can that has me concerned. Does this look safe to eat, and if so can you guys give me some recommendations on how to serve it?

  2. With crisp bread, red onions, sliced potatoes and fresh dill. Make sure you open the can under water

  3. Open it under water, it will probably spray otherwise. Eat it with boiled potatos, fine chopped red onions, crème fraiche, some dill.

  4. Get a clean bucket or large bowl, Fill a bit with water, Put can underwater, Open can.

Now have a look if bones and guts are still in the fish and remove what you don’t want to eat. Have it with some potatoes and some sauce you like that hides the meh taste.

Think about why this meh fish that just tastes of salt and like something that has gone stale, Is somehow a traditional dish. Then you remember that people used to have limited ways of storing food, Feel bad whilst eating said meh fish, Feel lucky that we don’t have to eat meh food everyday anymore, Feel lucky we got food at all. Feel sorry for your ancestors.

Repeat next year, The wheel of suffering must spin.

  5. You wont believe this, but connoisseurs states its best *after* the best before date.
Preferably one to two years old.

Open under water outside, when the wind direction is going towards the neighbour you hate.
I would also wear rubber gloves when opening.

Google picture link for ideas on how to serve and eat. Good luck!

  6. I prefer to eat it on buttered soft flat bread with sliced potato’s, finely chopped red onion and sour creme.

  7. I think surströmming is decent, but whoever gave you that probably secretly hates you unless it was as a joke

  8. Boil some potatoes, slice em and put on flatbread and then maybe some red onions and sourcream w. fish sprinkled with chives on top.

  9. Eat it straight out of the can and best place to do it ia at your workplace

  10. Swede here, just fn don’t.. unless you are severly drunk and disorderly…

  11. Boiled potatoes, chopped onions and tomatoes, sour cream. Lager is my preferred drink. Eat outdoors if possible. And watch out for the flies.

  12. As a Swede, I can’t stand it. I’ve had it twice, and it was two times too many. Interesting, albeit revolting, experience. My neighbor thought a sewer line had broken.

  13. Dont listen to the other people, they have it all wrong. This is truly the best way to do it. Open it in the smallest unventilated room you can find. Then pour the “juice im to a glass and drink or all. It should tatse like a sweet and sour soda. Then just eat the fish as a snack.

I dont understand how people can lie so much on the internet.

  14. It is supposed to have been refrigerated. Noticed people who buy these online often get a soup instead.

  15. You don’t.

It’s a very nice gift and traditional food but … you don’t want to eat. It does not taste well. That why you need so many sides and snaps.

I am a Swede and I have survived my entire life not eating surströmming. I am not saying that it is related but … just saying.

    Best of luck.
