Public comment on the arrangement ends on Monday night.
AUSTIN, Texas — TxDOT is trying to expedite highway projects by asking the federal government to continue letting the state approve its own environmental reviews.
For the past decade, TxDOT has worked under an agreement with the Federal Highway Administration that allows it to take responsibility for environmental checks under the National Environmental Policy Act. Those reviews analyze the impact of highway projects on clean air and water.
TxDOT says if the state continues to hold that responsibility, it will shave months off the review process. Critics say self-certification does not follow federal law.
Texans can share their thoughts on that arrangement. You have until 10:59 p.m. on Monday to make a comment in the federal register.
