The UK and Sweden have halted decisions on Syrian asylum claims due to the political turbulence and uncertainty in the wake of the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime.
According to the UK’s Independent, a British Home Office spokesperson stated: “The Home Office has paused decisions on Syrian asylum claims whilst we assess the current situation. We keep all country guidance relating to asylum claims under constant review so we can respond to emerging issues.”

While thousands of Syrians are currently living as asylum seekers in the UK, and 99% of Syrian claimants are accepted at the initial decision stage, all new claims are now on hold as the situation pans out on the ground.
Similarly, the Swedish Government’s migration agency has said that it too will be pausing all decisions on Syrian asylum applications and deportations.
As previously reported by Gript, both Austria and Germany have taken similar measures, citing similar reasons.
Furthermore, the French government has said that it is also considering suspending all ongoing Syrian asylum cases, and that it will come to a decision on this matter in the next few hours.
