Varadkar brands Putin ‘Hitler of the 21st century’ while calling for further sanctions against Russia

  1. We’re twenty-two years in to this century – with climate change and all the migration problems that will bring, there will be leaders far, far worse than Putin

  2. While people saying *thing I don’t like is literally Hitler* is an annoying internet phenomenon, I think it’s a fair comparison. The pretext of ‘protecting Russian minorities’ is just a new version of ‘protecting Sudeten Germans’

  3. It is interesting really in that Russia can never have a relationship with the West again as long as Putin is in power. It is amazing what he is willing to sacrifice for territorial gain in a region that does not want him.

  4. Not the fella with actual concentration camps for “reeducating” ethnic minorities, no? Or is the money he’s pouring into UCD too much to risk upsetting?

  5. Surely Stalin makes more sense. He literally invaded the entirety of eastern Europe twice. And Ukraine in the early 20s. Haha. Godwin’s law.

  6. I don’t like varadkar or fine gael but for some of you online oddballs, he could say the world is round and ye’d argue it was flat.

  7. Putin is the hitler of the 21sr century, but hitler is really the timurlane of the 20tj century, not enough people are talking about the steepe problem IMO. Nomadic culture and it’s consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

  8. Varadkar is a dose, I’ll never vote for him. But at least he’s not a total prick, he has some conscious clearly. I’m glad he’s speaking up.

People have thrown around the Hitler comparison too much, but in this case it is absolutely 100% relevant and accurate.

  9. People are calling for Military Help for Ukraine?

That’s…. that’s something we’ve never seen here before. Okay – what sort of equipment could we send to Ukraine? What shape does that take?

It’s definitely odd to hear hawkish voices. Or hear hawkish voices repeated, anyway.

Comments section is, of course, an utter toilet fire.

  10. Didn’t the rest of Europe turn a blind eye to hitler when he invaded Austria and the Czech Republic. Sounds very similar to this situation and it is why they need to come up with some very tough sanctions now or else the Baltic States and Georgia will be next.

  11. I may be downvoted for this but the Hitler comparison really isn’t helpful.
If he is Hitler then the only response is all out war with Russia because that was the only solution to Hitler, not talks, not sanctions, only war. Is Ireland / EU prepared to escalate this to ww3. I’m not so sure.
What Russia is doing is abhorent and should be condemend and Putin is a monster all on his own

  12. Do we only get one Hitler? Like is Bush now demoted? Like Putin is an awful tyrant to be sure and his invasion is a crime against humanity, so I’m not making excuses. But with Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Palestine, etc..

  13. We all know where this will ultimately end up…the Eye-talian Stallion will have to fly to Mother Russia and defeat Drago. Only then will the Russians believe that if he can change, they can change. Everyone can change.

  14. Putin has lost it. He appears emotionally unstable and his grip on reality is in question.

We Europeans should have learned this lesson in the Great War. Mutual defense agreements are incredibly dangerous – nobody can offer military assistance because if they do it guarantees unbounded escalation and a path to total war.

This is not to mention nuclear weapons.

Im willing to be proven wrong but NATO is looking like a miscalculation to me right now. How many European states would offer military assistance to Ukraine but can’t because of the threat of nuclear war…

  15. So can we seize russian owned property in Ireland now? We could do with a few extra houses / apartments / condos.

Actually better yet, seize them and use them to house Ukrainian refugees 🙂

  16. But no take on the Canadian Hitler? Does he know there is an foreign army occupation a couple hours north of him? Leo should refrain from such selective grandstanding before he gets Ireland dragged into something we are not equipped to take part in.

  17. Let’s go back a decade or more and watch Russia host the Olympics, multiple F1 races, champions league finals.
We all knew Putin was dodgy but we let our favourite sports stars shake hands with him.
It was never easy with it, but sure who the fuck am I? Some lad that has an issue with a dictator that wishes his favourite sports stars would have a bit of integrity and not go to Russia and shake this lads hand.
But then you think, sure they probably don’t have a clue about this lad, or what he’s at.

I’m angry that it took this invasion of the Ukraine to make people realise what Putin is like, but it seems the world is fucked and if there’s money somewhere, sport and entertainment will follow

  18. I’m surprised that’s all he called him. I was at least expecting him to tell old Vladimir Putin is a member of sinn fein .

  19. Its very obvious sometimes that Varadkar really wants to be iconic and grab attention by making grossly inflated statements or commit plagiarism of other well known speeches and take us for fools – and despot that he is to compare Putin to Hitler at this point is way OTT – and especially since my tax money went into pay plenty of PR people for him to then re hash Churchill’s war time speeches and Lord of the Rings scripts presented as his own.
