Toronto – A drone strike in Gojjam, Amhara region, Ethiopia, reportedly killed government soldiers who were captured during combat operations in the area. The strike occurred on Monday.

The Ethiopian government has been intensifying drone attacks in many parts of the Amhara region of Ethiopia over the past two months. Fano forces claim that the government resorted to intensified drone strikes after losing an infantry battle.

The captured soldiers were reportedly being served meals and coffee by locals when the drone attack was launched, according to Asres Mare Damtie, head of the political division of Gojjam Fano.

Two women serving coffee were killed in the strike, and a child carried on one of the women’s backs was wounded. The injured are receiving medical attention, though further details have not been provided by Fano leaders.

It is alleged that the drone strike was ordered directly by Air Force Commander Lt. General Yilma Merdassa, who was reportedly in Bahir Dar at the time.

The Fano leader’s update did not specify the exact location of the strike in Gojjam.

As reported by Borkena this past weekend, Fano forces have reintroduced restrictions on vehicle movement across Gojjam, with exceptions only for ambulances. Schools and banks have also been ordered to halt operations until further notice, effective today.

The Ethiopian Defense Force has not confirmed or denied the drone strike, which is alleged to have targeted captured soldiers.

Meanwhile, the Defense Force claims to have destroyed storage facilities used by Fano forces in the South Gondar area of the Amhara region. Brigadier General Teshome Yimer stated that “the base in Komma locality where the extremist group stores looted resources is entirely destroyed.” The military also reported seizing 49 quintals of grain and ambulances allegedly looted from health centers.

Fano forces have not commented on these claims.

The Defense Force has launched what it describes as the “final” military operation against Fano, with plans to conclude by the end of this month.

Last month, Defense Force Chief Field Marshal Berhanu Jula reportedly warned political leaders in the Amhara region that forces would be withdrawn if the operation failed to achieve its objectives.
