  1. The key goal was removing the current regime. How is that close?

  2. They grabbed all the territory that they wanted to take. Good luck Ukraine trying to get it back.

  3. Sound like they are preparing the narrative for peace talks.

  4. Russian economy fucked for the next decade: check!

Almost a million Russian lives fucked: check!

Small bit of strategically almost useless land stolen: check!

Russian military and technology become a global joke: check!

  5. There’s some lies we should let them have, if it means they are trying to find a way to stop this thing

  6. Realy? 23% interest rate while having 9% inflation, losing 300bil in sanctioned money and half milion serfs was the goal?

  7. And thats called for having increasing dead russian soldiers out there!

  8. Good that the goals are flexible depending on the situation. The Kremlin will tell a fairytale story that fits their achievements anyways.

  9. Sounds like the bullshit warm up notification to “We’ve bitten off more than we can chew comrades. Time to back off and look for an escape route because we are verily in the brown and smelly”.

  10. They changed these goals so often that they are now unachievable

  11. CSTO alliance in ruins, Assad lost Syria, 150,000 dead, 500,000 wounded, Russian no longer seen as a serious threat, two neutral countries joining NATO making it bigger, gas exports to Europe lost, thousands of tanks, hundreds of planes, thousands of armoured vehicles…. Russian economy destroyed….

  12. Sounds like Putin wants to cut his losses in Ukraine. Spin it as a win (how?) and pull back from the table.

  13. They will only move to negotiate when the writing is on the wall that they are likely to loose.
They will then bluff their strength but Ukraine may then be in a position to push military in some areas rather than immediately commit to talks

This winter has the potential to be significant so the next 5 months need a good backbone from the west so Ukraine can push however it feels best

  14. More the reason to give Ukraine all they need – so we can prevent this from ever becoming true.

Putin must never be allowed to spin this positively, it must be the downfall of this despot and his gang.

  15. Hope they remember to fuel their 40km long convoy this time.

  16. *Quick Vlad! We must declare victory before we lose!*

  17. Any peace deal must continue trade sanctions – particularly in gas – until land returned. If not they’re merely funding phase 2 and there’s no leverage in getting land back.

  18. Planning a face saving exit. Good news if true. Especially if the Orange Messiah doesn’t get involved and impose something too one sided.

  19. Sounds like they are planning to withdraw and claim a victory…hopefully

  20. Worrying since Trump is about 6 weeks away from taking office and would much rather win Putin’s approval than Zelenskyy’s.

  21. “We’ve almost had enough ass kicking and may think about calling it a day”

  22. 200 billion for trillions of land and resources. Life is cheap, keep hitting them with everything you’ve got.

  23. Goal posts being moved. This is very good news.

The interesting question is: what does a Russian think about the cost of the war, vs the returns? Presumably the average Russian agreed with what glorious leader said about the reasons for war. But will they not think that the cost (25% inflation, hundreds of thousands of dead – because we have to assume they know the numbers) seems a bit high compared to the reward?
