  1. NIMBYism is probably the only part of British defence that’s still world class /s

  2. China’s plans for huge new ~~embassy~~ espionage and decent suppression facility

    FTFY

  3. I believe this is what rayner said would be overruled. China has one of the largest economies in the world, there’s a lot of animosity between them and us (a lot very much justified) but things change quickly, as seen with Syria this week, so it would be stupid to reject huge investment in london due to nimby attitudes

  4. Good. The Chinese government is not a friend to the UK and has done nothing to show they deserve any more space on our land. Their treatment of the citizens of Hong Kong has been disgusting.

  5. To build an embassy from scratch like this they need to first get planning permission from the local council, and then they need to get approval from the national government to designate it as an embassy. They’ve fallen at the first hurdle here, and it seems that Westminster would have refused anyway.

What could have been quite funny is if the council did approve the planning permission, so they started building, but Westminster refused the embassy designation, so they’d have the building, but wouldn’t be able to use it as an embassy.

  6. We should be very wary of China; there are lots of Chinese backed APT groups involved in cyber-crime and cyber-espionage against the UK, but at the same time, the only way to bring an end to conflict is through dialogue. The Chinese government is a repressive government, it will be interesting to see over the next couple of decades whether it remains as such or whether it is forced to change

  7. This will be overruled instantly. And for those indignantly saying we should prevent China from exapanding their embassy.. grow up.

  8. Why not they are basically in everyone’s pocket… time is running out!

  9. London local council NIMBYism truly knows no bounds.

Not content with stopping you from buying food or drink after 11pm, ensuring you will never afford a home, and stymieing the economy by blocking train station redevelopment, film studio and data centre construction among many other projects, the planning department has turned its attention to international relations.

Thought you could begin to thaw relations with the world’s second largest economy? Well some bored local pensioners have other ideas…

  10. What’s actually bad about China? I appreciate that we have a financial interest in Taiwan and its control under the West, and China is unhappy with this.

What has China done that’s bad? Because propaganda is rampant on both sides and it’s hard to tell the difference when the whole ocean is muddy.
