France headed into a new political crisis Tuesday as opposition lawmakers vowed to topple the minority government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier in a no-confidence vote after just three months in office. If the government falls, several scenarios are possible. Emmanuel Macron could appoint a right-wing figure close to current Prime Minister Michel Barnier, but he could also try a different political line. Solange Mougin explains.

  1. A new PM chosen by Macron won't survive a vote of confidence in the French Parliament. Appointing a technocrat will only be a temporary measure and it won't solve the political crisis gripping France at the moment.

    Perhaps the best solution is for Macron to resign as President and allow the French electorate to choose either the right or the left political parties to govern them.

    He would not be setting a precedent. Charles De Gaulle resigned as French president after losing a referendum which he deemed important.
