So apparently its been a long-term of plan of Russia to retake control over Finland.

It was all laid out in a highly influential book written in Russia in the late 90s with deep connections to the Russian state.

I was shocked when reading the summary points of this book, its been the literal Putin playbook the past few years! The author views the collapse of the USSR and its Eastern Bloc satellites as an utter catastrophe for Russia, which of course is the very view of Putin.

See for instance the recent invasion of Ukraine. Just as laid out in the book, it is said Russia must settle its “Ukrainian problem” without which no other real progress can be made. So just as in the book, Putin has gone all-in on a Ukraine invasion to effectively end Ukrainian sovereignty. I mention this to prove the point the book is Putin’s playbook. So if its his playbook on Ukraine, it is his playbook on Finland.

See this bit from the above link on Finland:

Finland should be absorbed into Russia. Southern Finland will be combined with the Republic of Karelia and northern Finland will be “donated to Murmansk Oblast”.[9]

So basically that would be no more Finland.

Perhaps for those thinking “Finland is not Ukraine” and there’s not much to worry about, perhaps seeing the actually long term vision which mentions Finland by name and what the actual plan for Finland would be post Russia taking over might wake you up?

If you are curious, you can even now connect up which Russian district (Oblast) you will fall in under depending on where in Finland you reside.

TLDR: Russia is on quest for an expanded Eurasian empire with Russia at is core, and absorbing Finland into Russia among other moves.

  1. The relationship between Finland and Russia has been relatively friendly and merging Finland with Russian territories is easier said than done. Finnish language isn’t even close to Russian, and the Russian-speaking minority in Finland is small. Also why would they give Estonia to Germany, if they want to control the Baltic sea?

Things have changed since 1997, EU and Nato have expanded, and I doubt Russia would ever fight with China.

  2. It’s just ridiculous to predict behaviour of state based on some book from almost 30 years ago.

World changes, strategic situations change, economic incentives change. That book is way outdated.

I highly doubt Russian leaders read a manual or script when making decisisions…

  3. Is it going to include the huge influx of russians pouring in to the country soon? Finnish people becoming minority and putin just taking the country since its already full of russians… 😀
