With the cold winter weather moving in, Safe Space Chico has partnered with the First Baptist Church in Chico so they can offer shelter space to the homeless starting December 15th and continuing through March of 2025.
CHICO, Calif. – As stormy weather returns this week, Safe Space Chico has found a way to provide much-needed low-barrier shelter for the homeless. Despite ongoing challenges, the non-profit continues to adapt to ensure the safety and well-being of those in need.
Safe Space Chico has been working to establish an intake facility for some time. In October, it identified a promising location on Esplanade, but the organization had not yet applied for a permit or paid the $14,000 fee required to secure the space.
Now, according to a statement from Executive Director Hilary Crosy, the Esplanade building is under construction and is no longer an option. Without an intake center, the non-profit has partnered with local churches to provide shelter. Starting December 15, the First Baptist Church will host shelter services, with plans to continue through March 2025. Only a few dates over the next three months remain unfilled by church volunteers.
One man shared how Safe Space Chico has been a lifeline for him over the years.
“They saved me last year from heart failure that I’ve had the last two years,” said Nick Caslet, who is currently homeless in Chico. “I’ve been fighting to find a house, so Safe Space is a lot better than a lot of the programs they have out there. I mean, a lot better.”
Caslet emphasized the importance of the program, particularly during extreme weather conditions.
“It makes me a lot happier, a lot happier that I won’t suffer from that situation every night,” he said. “Because the last couple of nights, I have been able to breathe because of the moisture—so cold.”
In the statement, Crosy noted that Safe Space Chico would not pursue an intake center downtown due to opposition from local business owners. However, discussions are underway about using Trinity Methodist Church’s parking lot as a resource once again.
