2. I’m sure he stole a lot of money but there’s no way Syria had an economy strong enough for him to steal 135 billion. I’d like to see how this Turkish newspaper got these figures.

12. Whilst I’m sure he stole absolutely everything he got his hands on, that figure is complete nonsense. The Syrian economy is simply not large enough and nor did he have enough wealthy foreign backers to amass that much wealth.

33. The $135B is probably the total value of the Assad family wealth that they’ve siphoned away from Syria over the years into various offshore accounts.

    Given the speed at which they had to leave, I doubt it was a last minute affair to air/sea lift gold and cash. A large operation like that would have needed many players and corroborating witnesses at a time where everyone was cutting and running.
