Would seem bizarre that they don’t want to export energy and make a nice bit of money on it, but what this really shows us is just how scarce energy is becoming in this region.
Everyone involved should be red faced about this, because it says that nobody is capable of energy abundance.
Our “friends and partners” would sooner damage the environment and lose out on 16% savings than work with us. Nice one!
So, the EU declined a mutually financially beneficial deal out of political cussedness.
With friends like the EU, eh?
The UK is a net importer of electricity, so needs to resolve this energy dependence, as dealing with the EU is always going to be a risk.
The EU is acting silly here and Ireland will act to stop their silliness. Why? Because Ireland imports a lot of electricity from us. They have no other country to import from if I recall correctly. If they want to shut us off, we’ll shut Ireland off as well.
We aren’t members. What many don’t understand is we are pretty much persona non grata and if they can fuck us over they will. They have very little reason to be chummy with us. The eu is known for been a hard and unmoving negotiating partner. Again…we aren’t members. We left the gang.
Crazy given the EU continues to import Russian gas to this day.
Works both ways with the record comment.
Britain does over 50% of its trade with the EU. When we were a member we paid $17.8bn on average every year to be a member for access to the biggest global market with no tariffs costing both businesses and punters extra.
British people are per capita £1000 worse off and Brexit has allegedly been more damaging for the UK economy than covid.
Margaret Thatcher in 1984, pro-EU convservative, negotiated Britain’s rebate to be significantly less than 1% GDP.
Collectively, all EU member are expected to pay 1% GDP. UK could also claims $4.8bn as a rebate.
The EU also spent grants for £4.4bn on poor areas, farming and private sector, significantly less than UK grants available.
We gone done pissed in a hurricane expecting for it not to blow back on us.
lmfao, why are the butthurt Europeans so pretty? We were their source of natural gas when they lost access to Russian gas. Europe had failed to develop their regasification infrastructure, so a lot of the American LNG shipped over here had to be regasified in the UK and then piped to Europe.
The UK priority should be to have an efficient network within its nations. With so much wind capacity in Scotland and little local demand, there have been plenty of instances this year when the grid could not transport the electricity generated to the demand down south in England. It will only get worse as significantly more capacity is due to come online in Scotland in the next 10 years with large scale fixed and floating offshore wind projects. The transmission network urgently needs to be upgraded, but no one wants new high voltage transmission lines near its house..
Facilitating export to Europe would not make a massive difference as it stands as most high voltage cables connecting Great Britain with the continent are in south England, not in Scotland where renewables generation is higher than demand
This is legitimately petty and if anything, will boost the brexit groups. I’ve observed EU behaviour with the UK and from my perspective they seem petty, vindictive and have every intention to make an example out of the UK.
I feel like this is no bad thing. The UK shouldn’t be relying on other countries to generate power anyway.
Oh no! If it isn’t the consequences of our actions
