  1. The data for the US comes from the [U.S. Energy Information Administration](https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=10&t=5) and includes both state and federal taxes.

The data for Canada comes from [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_fuel_taxes_in_Canada) and includes federal and provincial taxes plus carbon and sales taxes.

And finally the data for Europe comes from the [Tax Foundation](https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/eu/gas-taxes-in-europe-2024/) and only show excise taxes and does not include VAT where it is charged.

  2. Fun Fact: Australia banned the use of lead in gas/petrol for motor vehicles more than 20 years ago, but they still insist on advertising it as “unleaded”

  3. Even the most expensive prices here are insanely cheap when you think about it.

To get gasoline you need to first drill several km long holes in the middle of the oceanto to get oil. Then the oil needs to be transported to giant refineries across the world. Then the gasoline needs to be transported yet again across the world to every single country on earth, and then transported to every gas station in the each country. And someone needs to make profit from this as well.

All this for max $3 per gallon is actually insane how cheap it is. I don’t dare to think how much more expensive water is in some places.

  4. Those roads don’t pay for themselves, so the money just comes from somewhere else

  5. i knew petrol was cheap in the us but this is bonkers. i filled up just today at 1.81€/litre (germany)
