That says a great deal more about South Africa’s dysfunctional economy than Elon Musk’s successful business ventures.
Comparing a total net worth to a gross annual production is pretty arbitrary?
I don’t think this counts as beautiful data I’m afraid. I think this counts as “data I’m purposefully presenting in a way to try and mislead people”
Net worth and gdp are not directly comparable. Net worth is the value of all assets. The value of all of South Africa is MUCH higher than Musk’s net worth.
South Africas in somewhat of a quiet crisis at the moment
ANC still has power so nothing will change but it’s a ticking time bomb, sad for such a beautiful country
Tends to happen when you buy the government of the wealthiest economy on earth
They cannot be compared. One’s a stock, the other’s a flow.
If Mary has 10 onions, and Steve 12 carrots, how many tomatoes do I have? Yep, that’s right, same logic as OP.
OP is getting downvoted for posting something perceived as being positive about Elon Musk
2020 just show how much he manipulated people into buying Dogecoin in order to make a lot of money.
I hate that I exist in the world where a loose comparison like this is even possible. Sure, the two things being compared are different, but I think the underlying message is clear: a single individual’s financial stature rivals that of an entire nation made up of millions of individuals who actually work and produce things of value.
Not hard to do since SA if falling off a cliff.
Putting aside the fact that GDP and net worth are very different things, Elon’s net worth is mostly imaginary.
but how does that compare to apples and bitcoin energy consumption?
I mean this shows what an absolute fucking bubble Tesla is
P/E 110 and rising despite flat revenues for like >1 year. Everybody thinking this is some kind of election play like trump doesn’t hate EVe
Golly the last 4 years sure treated Elon well.
Not much action in 2016 through 2020 though.
what a ridiculous species we are.
Can someone explain how he’s worth so much to an idiot like me? From what I can see, in 2023 Tesla had $15 billion, SpaceX had $3 billion in profit, and he spent $44 billion on Twitter which had negative estimated profits. How is he worth $400+ billion?
Upvote from me. The floating smiling Elon head cracked me up for some reason 😂
Elon has done quite well under the Biden administration…
Basically Tesla and SpaceX are more valuable than the entire South African economy?
Shouldn’t his wealth be part of SAs wealth? 🤣
You’d think with all this money he’d try fixing his home country before trying to “fix” ours
Classic “immigrant coming to America and making more money than the entire country they left” success story. Happens all the time /s
Maybe they can repatriate and tax him to improve this data point
“The total weight of Mars is heavier than the circumference of the earth!” /s
These two metrics aren’t comparable. Can people please stop comparing them.
If you compare net worth to gdp, you don’t understand either..
In 10 years time, Elon Musk’s net worth will be bigger than Canada’s nominal GDP size.
This is dumb. One is a rate and the other is a scalar.
“My house is longer than my bicycle’s top speed.”
Makes no sense.
these two stats are definitely comparable and they demonstrate that a country of 60 million people produced less wealth in a whole year than elon musk’s current net worth. that is significant and does provide perspective into how massive elon’s wealth is, trying to write these two stats off as incomparable is incredibly myopic
Stated differently, the market believes that the portions of Tesla and Space X that musk owns are worth more than a single years GDP from South Africa. That valuation is based on expectations of perpetual earnings into the future discounted at the current discount rate (usually 3%). So, across the rest of eternity, some fraction of space x and Tesla owned by musk will produce as much value as one year of South Africa’s national output.
This should be in log scale.
Will he buy SA and rename it Xfrica?
Downvote because to compare a rate, GDP, vs an asset, net worth, is intrinsically dishonest.
Envy is the ulcer of the soul
Wait it’s all covid market panic flip?
Obviously they arnt comparable, but to what extent exactly? Like economically speaking how do you even compare the value of the economic output of 70 million people with the huge shareholder value of a corporation? Or even just theoretical prices for portions of a trillion dollar company?
Just wait till reddit finds out about The Rothschild Family’s publicly undeclared wealth (Estimated to be roughly 15x that of Elon Musk when land-holdings are taken into account)
GDP is income, not wealth. These are two completely unrelated data points.
South Africa has gold, diamonds and uranium, but corruption is so bad that there’s no clean water, and even the African miners are poorly treated.
Meanwhile, Musk has popularised the electric car, saved Ukraine from invasion and made the best rocket system in the world.
My takeaway from the graph is that SA’s GDP is declining despite every advantage while Musk is making big dollars out of science and business acumen.
You might not like Elon, but compared to SA politicians he is no worse.
In fairness, SA have done everything they can to sabotage themselves. Also, insane amounts of political and governmental corruption.
What about Elon Musk’s GDP vs South Africa’s GDP? Lol.
