Why China Won’t Rescue Russia’s Flailing Economy

  1. “The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), a Chinese-led development bank, suspended all business with Russia and Belarus on March 3, a possible sign of the limits to Beijing and Moscow’s relationship. Similarly, the Shanghai-based New Development Bank also suspended business with Russia the same day.”

  2. Because they can’t prop up their entire economy nor do they want to get sanctioned for propping up their economies… Also like the article mentions, what are they even supposed to buy from them to prop them up? There isn’t much to buy.

  3. Why people keep thinking that China and Russia are allies? Even during communist times they were competitors. They may share common interests from time to time, but Russia’s loss is China’s gain.

  4. As if they could. Rescuing Russian economy, against the rest of the world, would be a huge effort. It is not like something they can just snap their fingers to solve, is it?

  5. China is already working with Russia to filling the gap of the sanction placed by Visa & Mastercard also replacing the others payments like apple play to alipay(Chinese). If you check the Chinese social media are full of Putin warship, propaganda, and blocking all pro-Ukraine informations…. Chineses are gathering to “buy” Russia products to found the war (literally commenting this by Chinese)

  6. Just looking at natgas, China currently imports about 16bl ckm annually, with plans to increase this to 35 bil in 3-4 years. Contrast this with exports to EU which make up 180-200bl, and the fields that supply the two regions are not even connected.

So yeah China can’t replace the EU short or medium term. Not to mention the leverage China would gain over Russia.
