Ukraine conflict: Liz Truss backs people from UK who want to fight

  1. This is interesting and a big change of stance from when the fight against ISIS was occurring. IIRC people who went to fight against them were arrested when they returned.

I wonder how many, if any, from the UK will go and fight.

  2. Civilians without training against professional soldiers is not a good idea under any circumstances, but especially when you have people going out there with romantic notions and adventure in their heads. I’m not sure what Truss is playing at here.

  3. The fucking useless thing could offer free flights at least ffs. Imagine if every country offered volunteer brigades free flights over, maybe some personal protection too (plate+carrier).

  4. Lead by example Liz, I’ll help you get your kit on. There will be plenty of photo ops waiting for you on the frontline.

  5. **Tinfoil Hat Time!**

Thinking about the conservatives here and their constantly shifting of position on the Ukraine matters makes me think or at least confirms some suspicions that they are intensely being blackmailed by Russia psy-ops connected to the Kremlin. if they think the doors are closing on Putin and his empire with good degrees of certainty, they will do everything they can to get rid of him. They are partners out of necessity and not values, not really. Its a demon they could do without, this might be their chance.

If he survives this (which he wont now) then the conservatives would be finished as a retaliation of turning on him during this crisis.

    **Takes hat off.**

  6. Maybe Liz Truss should send her family members first before asking people to go and fight. She should go and stand beside the Ukrainian president

  7. Incredibly irresponsible statement from Truss playing to traditional Tories and trying to look tough. Journalists should know by now not to ask he questions like this.

Not at all without precedent that some people will go and get themselves killed over there.

  8. This is illegal isn’t it? I watched the interview and it just looked like she didn’t know what the correct answer to the question was, so said what might’ve been considered an honourable thing to say, thought not quite legal?

  9. She would, but if needed, would she volunteer. No, she quite happy for other people to risk there lives, if it helps make the Tories look like they are doing something.

  10. She also frames it as a war against Europe.

*She said Ukrainians were fighting for freedom, “not just for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe”.*

  11. Can we send her as a non lethal deterrent. A minute of listening to her drivel will have entire russian army groups begging to surrender.

  12. How about not revoking citizenship of aid workers who travel to Syria and Palestine for humanitarian work. Going to fight Putin is all good though eh?

  13. I thought trotting off to fight for foreign countries or organisations was now illegal.

Wasn’t some hasty law brought in to stop people doing that for ISIS?

  14. Finally some common sense and taking action that may actually help. If the UK Government is too scared to get involved at least private citizens can show courage and fight for other peoples freedom.

This could all have been prevented if the UN had stationed troops in Ukraine before Putin Invaded, tbh the UN can still put together a multinational force and head in. But they wont because the UN is a joke just like the league of nations before it.

Unfortunately the western governments will realize too late that sanctions are a waste of time. Hopefully the UN move to remove Russia and China from the UN security council and then put together a multinational force to push the russians back out of Ukraine.

  15. Her statement in itself is illegal, let alone the actual act of going. If the British state supports this, they have no grounds to vilify Shamima Begum.

  16. I’m not a fighter or a medic or anything – but I’ve been seriously considering doing something. I can drive, I’m 1 manpower, I can transport stuff. I want to help but Ukraine is so far away!

  17. Ngl, Liz Truss seems way out of her educational capacity to be leading as foreign secretary. How she got this position is beyond me.

  18. She can shut the truss up because she cares more about being a war leader and being seen as a tough person then doing her job. We shouldn’t be encouraging people to fight as it can make matters worse and at some point, we’ll be fully dragged into it.
