Europe looks to Africa to fill natural gas gap

  1. Perfect. Put actual development and infrastructure in African countries that sorely need it and solve a large portion of Europe’s energy problems.. it’s two birds with one stone and it doesn’t get better than that

  2. Well, diversification of sources is good, but it’s not like African countries are angels in terms of freedom/democracy…

European countries should additionally start exploration for local gas sources, local LNG terminals and invest in removing overal dependency on fossil fuels (and imo focus on nuclear short-term and renewable long-term)

  3. This is written basically only from the German perspective, which means only considering the TransMed pipeline which goes from Algeria all the way to Central Europe. Thus, the emphasis is on NIGAL which would connect to that.

Italy however is also now considering building the GALSI pipeline to Sardinia as well as increasing purchases through the TransMed. The Libyan Greenstream is also back online now, but it’s not a stable source. More faith is put by Italy on the TAP pipeline from Azerbaijan, which is still at low capacity and could double its output.

  4. Here comes the time where China’s presence in Africa will profit them AND they’ll profit from Russias fall. The plan all along?

  5. > And that path is far from over. By the time the transition to renewables is achieved, other African countries, such as Ghana, Mozambique, and Tanzania, could become key natural gas suppliers for Europe.

Wait… when the transition is over we won’t need gas as much, will we?
