Germany: can 100% renewable power reduce energy costs within the decade? (Yes)

  1. The quasi-religious nuclear-cult that is this sub will probably not accept this. Expect many ad hominem arguments ranging from “The authors are not qualified!!11” to “Follow the money”.

  2. Excuse me what the fuck? Is the « study » this article mentioned only the literally 4 page long paper linked at the end?

They keep mentioning the decreasing cost of storage and how it’s basically not a problem, what solution are they even talking about? Who the fuck greenlit this? Literal garbage, I just wasted 15 minutes of my life.

  3. Nothing substanstial about balancing and storage problem And after gas suppliers decrease production due to decreased demand. Shutted down alternative like nuclear. During long term low wind or solar you would cry “Russia gib us gas”.

  4. Scotland, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden will be the off shore wind megas of the next 200 years.

Germany needs to massively upgrade training in marine engineering and technician training. And, ideally, marine engineering safety and contingency designs.

Also, time to at least develop a few tidal, thermal gradient, and wave energy off shore trials.

  5. I does sound plausible. Renewables don’t have any other costs than maintenance (including power storage)

    The questions are the following:

    * How soon can a full dependency on renewables be implemented? In five years? Ten? Fifteen?
    * Can this solution be exported and used by the majority of the world in a timely manner? At least faster than nuclear?
    * What would be the consequences if suddenly everyone used wind turbines? (That’s a personal one, it seems weird we can just take energy from the wind without it becoming weaker and this having consequences)

  6. Wow. What a great post from the “best thinkers on energy”!

We don’t need nuclear anymore, guys! *Within a decade*, total system costs of renewables and storage *can* decline to make them cheaper than fossil fuels and nuclear!

    Just gotta have some patience.

Someone call Greta, maybe we can start the transition within a decade. She’s gonna be soooooo happy.

Thanks guys. I almost thought we would need to keep those perfectly fine nuclear power plants open for a few years. But we got enough time after 2030, so we can just close them now and burn gaz for a few more years. No biggie, after that, solar and wind are going to be so cheap, climate change will be solved.
