(WJAR) — Dozens of people who showed up to the Department of Human Services on Monday got a glimpse of the scope of the data breach in the RI Bridges computer system.
Gov. Dan Mckee says hackers could release personal information as soon as this week.
But we still don’t know exactly whose information was compromised, and what exactly was taken.
People who have been inside the DHS told NBC 10 that employees have told them the computer system is down.
NBC 10 has been explaining to some people what’s going on, while some are already aware of the breach.
On Monday morning, a line formed outside of the DHS on Reservoir Avenue.
Those who qualify for service like Snap benefits, Medicaid, and Health source RI plans are left wondering what will happen to their to personal information.
“I feel like we’re already at our lowest. I mean we’re reaching out for help so I feel like it’s kind of a hit below the belt for those that are already reaching out for help,” said one person in line.
State leaders announced over the weekend the RI bridge System has been hacked on December 5th, websites associated with the services shut down.
Sensitive Information like social security numbers, banking information, and EBT card logins are at risk.
“My social security number or whatever the case may be, they could be using it in committing crimes, you know?” Said Kevin Monteiro of Providence said. “And something happened, I could get stopped and have warrants for something that doesn’t involve me. So it’s a ripple effect. The ripple effect is tremendous.”
For now, applications are being taken on paper for a number of services.
Updates from Rhode Island can be found online.
The governor is providing an update at 3:00 p.m., which NBC 10 will live stream.
