
Today, Switzerland is known for its dense railway network. But the start of the railway era in this country was late and complicated. On 15 June 1844 the first train on Swiss soil chugged across the Swiss border and into the temporary station outside Basel.

Related funfact: In 1852, Basel and Baden [signed a contract](https://www.gesetzessammlung.bs.ch/app/de/texts_of_law/954.510) about the usage of Swiss soil for the Baden railway and the railway station (Badischer Bahnhof). The contract is still valid to this day, even though some of the language used makes only limited sense today.
