Six in ten Britons support a scheme to resettle Ukrainian refugees in the UK

  1. With the Russian invasion of Ukraine in full swing, it has been reported that by the UN refugee agency that 100,000 Ukrainians have been internally displaced by the conflict.

More are likely to flee as the conflict progresses, with the Polish deputy interior minister saying Poland needs to prepare for up to a million refugees. Other countries bordering Ukraine, like Romania, Slovakia, Moldova and Hungary, are also reportedly preparing for an influx of people.

What should Britain’s contribution to the humanitarian crisis be? Six in ten Britons (63%) say that they would support the UK introducing a scheme to resettle some Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion. Only 18% are opposed.

On the more specific question of exactly how many Ukrainian refugees should be accepted, the most common answer was “a few thousand”, which a figure equivalent to 17% of the general population picked*, followed by “a few tens of thousands”, at 14%. Another 9% would be willing to welcome “a few hundreds of thousands”.

Labour voters are more willing to offer refuge to greater numbers of Ukrainians: 31% say the UK should accept a few tens or a few hundreds of thousands, compared to 14% of Conservatives.

Asked whether they believe the UK has a moral obligation to offer asylum to Ukrainian refugees, half of Britons (50%) say that we do. A third (32%) believe that we do not.

Two thirds of Labour voters say Britain has a moral obligation to offer asylum to Ukrainians fleeing the war. Conservative voters tend to think the country has no special obligation to do so, by 47% to 38%.

  2. Well that seems low. But it aligns with a portion of the country which votes for a certain party and a certain policy so I shouldn’t be too suprised

  3. As warming as it is that the UK sentiment towards refugees has finally shifted a little, I’m pretty sure they all just want to go home.

  4. It’s hilarious seeing the same people who are constantly moaning about refugees and ‘putting out homeless first!!!111’ on Facebook now sharing stuff about Ukraine being attacked.

Do they understand that most refugees who come here are fleeing wars?

  5. There’s enough space for people till its safe to go back we welcome all refugees with open arms and hot cups of tea

  6. 40% of people asked in this poll dont, but 99% of Tory MPs don’t – they want 100% hand-wringing but 0% immigrants .sorry refugees.

  7. Really disappointed that its not 10 in 10 people supporting it. Middle to upper class elderly? send them to Northern Ireland we will gladly accept them

  8. Oh, the irony. A little bit more than 50% voted to leave the EU to get back control on the borders (and get rid of refugees) and now more people are in favor of welcoming refuges.

I have to note that there must be an overlap in those two percentages, so there is at least one person out of ten that voted to leave and now wants to welcome the Ukrainian refugees.

  9. I support whoever made money from this fucking conflict takes refugees. The gas, weapon, hedge funds, oil companies. I as a poor ordinary pleb don’t give a shit and will punch anyone who tries to start a war, profit from it then dump shit like this on us.

  10. So where they going to live, wile we have a housing shortage, or was that just made up, to inflate property prices. There already too many native people in this country waiting for suitable housing, and now these people will come here, get housed straight away, and the natives will be put back down the list, and have a longer wait.

  11. Oh, and I bet, those 6 out of the 10 are private landlords, who will be payed Tax payers money, via the government, just to help the rich get richer again.

  12. To be fair, Ukrainian refugees are fellow Europeans and women and children. Whereas the refugees from Africa and Middle East are often Men of fighting age, which tend to cause trouble in the countries they go to. E.g. crime and terrorism.

If I had to choose between the two, obviously Ukrainian women and children would be prioritised, as they are more likely to integrate (we share common values) and provide a positive impact on society.

  13. Curiously I know an individual who works with some of the UKs biggest humanitarian charities. Most recently regarding the Afghan situation.

Last night she showed me a small part of a WhatsApp group she’s in that has some very well connected individuals.

She was saying how mental it is that she’s privy to this information at source but she said it is unlikely the UK will need to take any Ukrainians as Poland has it covered. Any aid will likely be financial support to Poland.

  14. Serious question, why does it say 6 in 10 rather than 3 of 5?

Maybe I need to retake maths.

  15. I support it, but I think the brunt should fall on neighbouring countries who are already welcoming them. We are after all one of the most populous countries in Europe. And if people are taken in, proper criminal record checks should be done

  16. My grandfather was my hero, a Ukrainian POW from the 2nd World War. I very much support this plan. He was utterly viceless despite all the horrors he experienced. More people like him in our country would only be beneficial in the long run.

  17. I used to think the vast majority of people were good people, but 60/40 split seems about right with more experience.

  18. Have the Government realised that if we take in thousands of Ukrainian refugees they might very well solve the shortfall of Class 1 HGV drivers overnight? >!Yes, this is a joke.!<

  19. About 2 in 10 said they “Don’t know” so the implication that 4 in 10 oppose it is a bit misleading. However at least they went into more specific numbers as obviously a few thousands/tens of thousands is a lot more realistic than hundreds of thousands, especially if this is permanent resettlement rather than just during the conflict.

  20. Well someone has to replace all the Polish plumbers after Brexit….. /s.

If true that is a seriously decent thing to do.

  21. ‘Supports a scheme’? I’ll go better.

I’m a single man renting a three bedroom house. I could probably support at least four people. A small family or two couples. Give them a place to stay and pay for food for as long as necessary.

  22. Goes to show we can get anything done if the media decides to report events properly and make readers feel sympathy for the victims of the world.

“Yes we want refugees, BUT NOT THE BROWN ONES”

  23. and how many of them accept that housing needs erected in their area to do this?

since there is a catastrophic housing shortage anyway.

  24. Now that there’s white Europeans fleeing war, it will be interesting to see if the usual suspects will hold firm to their anti-immigration beliefs.

Will Nigel Farage get on his soapbox again to whinge?

  25. In case you’re wondering why it’s only 60%, remember Ukraine formed a key part of the brexit campaigns lies where they seemed to think that Ukrainians in the EU was a good reason for the UK to leave the EU.

Don’t forget what they did, also do not forget that brexit was a Russian attack on the UK aided by traitors at even the highest level of media and politics.
