What if they stopped keeping animals in captivity?
Lol nope. Maybe it’s time to let the pandas die off. We’ve been trying to save them for so long that the main conservationist said he’d shoot, prep and eat the last mating paid if it meant that other animals more deserving of conservation efforts got the same amount of help as an animal that actively refuses to breed itself away from extinction.

The zoo is huge. What kind of fireworks are people letting off that you can hear loudly inside?

God, people will really suggest anything but agreeing fireworks should be banned. Why are people so precious about a big bang and a bit of colour in the sky
Think it’s kind of mental that anyone can just buy and set off explosives. Isn’t it enough for the council to make a nice show in a park somewhere that everyone can enjoy.
Fireworks for the bells is cool. Random wankers setting off fireworks all around you at any time they feel like is mental. Never mind just the zoo, half the houses in the city have pets or babies that are scared of the fireworks. Is it worth it just to see a bright light go boom?

Two of my friends had to have dogs put down this year because the fear from the fireworks started causing them to have seizures. Every year you also read about yet more people firing fireworks into people’s houses or into businesses. We have such tight controls for everything, cigarettes, booze, guns, but when it comes to buying small brightly coloured bombs, yeah go for it.
So, does the zoo intend to assemble a temporary sound proofer to dull sound and ease distress?
The world needs to construct zoological parks to reflect this for sensitive creatures and even on a lesser scale play obscuring sounds to reduce outside noise, it’s what the likes of Bluetooth is for, nights when keepers need to be around their charges and help them through it.

Can’t we have silent fireworks if we’re going to have them at all. I have dogs, and seeing how scared they make them makes me feel really bad for proper wild animals who don’t have humans there to try reassure them, just random explosions of light and sound scaring the shit out of birds, badgers, hedgehogs, deer, insects, etc.
Just remember everyone on here calling people selfish for enjoying fireworks…are trying to have them banned…so the majority suffers because of a minority belief… tell me again about being selfish. Its not even about the fireworks for people anymore…its about what they loved being criticised, banned or outlawed because a small group of don’t enjoy it. People are just sick of it. Having insider knowledge they are lying about this. They died days apart and likely got killed due to poor care. It is one death of many recently including the cheetah being kept alone while being animals that require constant attention. I worked in the place and it is horrific. Many people with poor mental health zero support and thousands lost to the poor management.
The chronic issue stems from understaffing, poor HR support and mostly the entire place has bosses only left over because anyone with any sense left for a better job. Unironically the place almost killed me and destroyed several of my friends. I would throw myself off the forth bridge before I took a job their again. Why anyone goes is a real mystery because it looks like shit and half the animals are goats.
The place actively discourages improvement, the CEO has no idea what is happening 90% of the time. It is honestly the most toxic place I have ever had the displeasure of working in. It is an open joke the place is cursed. The cleaners are suing the place and if I had been employed for longer I would have taken them to court.
I think they have a point, but surely fireworks go off every year. Maybe it means there’s something deeper than the ‘animals getting killed by loud fireworks’, for example poor veterinary care, unsuitable accomadation? Unless it’s been proven that lots of fireworks were going off just outside the zoo entrance.

I’m going against the grain here and say it’s an outrageous and bonkers demand to ban fireworks from the public.
Fireworks aren’t going to be banned. Given that, the zoo needs to find an alternative solution. I’m far from an expert, but perhaps transporting the red pandas out of the city centre that night, giving them sedatives, or better soundproofing their enclosures might be considered. It’s not like this has been sprung on them. They’ve had all year to come up with a feasible plan rather than trying to shift blame at the 11th hour.
