The U.S. and Canada are investing in the Mactung mine, located on the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories, which contains one of the largest tungsten deposits globally. The investment, totaling $35 million, will fund infrastructure improvements and feasibility studies, with the aim of securing a North American supply of tungsten, crucial for U.S. military applications. Fireweed Metals, which acquired the mine in 2022, is leading the project, but the First Nation of Na-cho Nyäk Dun has expressed moral opposition to the connection between tungsten mining and weapons production. Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai emphasized the project’s importance for regional security and economic development, while concerns about environmental impacts and Indigenous rights remain. The project is seen as a strategic move to reduce reliance on overseas tungsten sources, particularly from China.
